A new Avian Ambassador: Hayden! Here's more from our Assistant Curator, Draper Museum Raptor Experience, a.k.a. Chief Raptor Wrangler, Melissa Hill: Hayden is an adult, male Swainson’s Hawk who ended up at Teton Raptor Center in Jackson, Wyoming, after being hit by a car. Lead was found in his blood which might have made him weak, leading to the collision with the vehicle.

He suffered a fractured coracoid (similar to your collar bone) and pelvis. Those bones did heal, but as they were beginning his physical therapy for release they noticed he had urates (the white part of when they go to the bathroom) on his tail. Turns out, he does not have full range of motion of his tail and cannot lift it properly. He is able to fly but he cannot steer or maneuver properly to be releasable.
Hayden arrived at the Center on Earth Day (yesterdat, April 22nd) and is settling in nicely. I am hoping he will make his first public appearance in the next couple weeks, but you never know. He came with some significant damage to his tail feathers (not surprising) so he might not be doing too many programs this summer as that tail is slowly replaced with new feathers.

The Center now hosts an electric car charging station—installed TODAY just west of the Robbie Powwow Garden at the southeastern corner of the property. Patrick Lawson is there this afternoon with his Tesla discussing and demonstrating how it works. http://ow.ly/PfGc30jBTh5
