Combining Quadcopters and 3D Printing...

Researchers in London developed a set of quadcopter robots that autonomously remove dangerous objects. The first is fitted with a 3D printer; it flies to an object, prints sticky filament onto it, and flies away. The other, beefier robot lands on the object, adheres to the filament, then flies the object to a safe place.

Wow.

The End Of Antibiotics...

WHO says world poised for 'post-#antibiotic' era.

The post-antibiotic era is near, according to a report released today by the World Health Organization (WHO). The decreasing effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents is a global problem that requires the establishment of a surveillance system to monitor its worldwide spread, the group says.

There is nothing hopeful in the WHO report, which pulls together research papers estimating antibiotic resistance in 129 member states to show extensive antibacterial resistance in every region of the world. Overuse of antibiotics in hospitals and in agriculture, to promote livestock growth, quickly select for bacteria that resist the drugs, while human movement and poor sanitation practices contribute to the spread of genes that confer resistance.

MIT Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRL)
MIT researchers have been developing SRLs that can help you do stuff that would be annoying, uncomfortable, or impossible to do on your own.
MIT's shoulder-mounted SRL is designed to assist in tasks that take place over your head, or in situations where your other two arms are busy and you need a hand (literally) with something.

What are SRL's?
Unlike conventional exoskeletons, these Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRL) act as third and fourth arms and therefore augment the workspace and the skills of the human.

The system is worn through a backpack-like harness with padded straps and hip belt. The mechatronic structure, connected to the harness with a compliant element, is composed of a backpack unit and two robotic arms. The unit is placed behind the lower back of the user, and hosts the system actuators.

The robotic arms are attached to the main structure in correspondence of the iliac crest, the thick edge of the hip bone. This minimizes the interference with human motion and maximizes the robotic limbs’ workspace, allowing them to act both as arms and as legs.
