THE MIKE HARDING FOLK SHOW

http://www.mikehardingfolkshow.com/category/podcasts/

Over five years ago the BBC ignominiously put him out to grass from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Programme in an act of undeniable ageism. Mike Harding brushed himself down and rose again like a pheonix through the folk radio ashes and as if remembering the old adage, "anything you can do, I can do better" and decided to take on the behemoth of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Mike Harding won as a cheeky, charismatic "David" against an intransigent "Goliath" and the folk radio landscape, not only became a much better and enriched place, but musical and social justice was veritably seen to be done.

I personally smiled and chuckled and smiled again, the wry smile of a Gabriel Oak. What followed was a weekly one hour "plus" podcast of "the very best in folk, roots and acoustic music"

Now, five years later, The Mike Harding Folk Show Podcast #252 broadcast on Sunday 22.10.2017 is sadly announced to be the last one, as Mike himself bowed out with a song sung by himself "Closing Time," to close the final podcast.

Thank you Mike Harding for being such a wonderful inspiration and for bringing so much pleasure to so many people all over the world!

The Night Watchman of Bonn

Come and take a stroll through Bonn in 1698 this Friday evening o8.09.17.

You'll never really know who or what or where you are, or whither you are heading, unless you've taken some time to consider where you've actually come from. Get to know this truly beautiful city on the river Rhine which has been inhabited since Roman times, and even before that, by taking an evening candlelit stroll through Bonn in 1698 with Master John the night watchman and chance returning a wiser person than you once departed. Learn about religious and political wars, witchcraft, incarcerations and executions. Discover some of the sneaky tricks of tradesmen and how they were dealt with. Hear about Master Hans the executioner from the dark side and why the German Purity Law from 1516 from the place whence the ruling Wittelbach family hails, governing the brewing of wholesome beer, was such a thoroughly good thing that it stood the test of time for many centuries to come.
Learn the contrast between spine-chillingly rough public justice on the one hand and the sometimes astonishing charitable human compassion on the other. Why is the number twelve so significant in medieval city architecture in northern Europe? When were WMPs first employed in a European military campaign? Why did poor beggars fulfill such a mutually useful rôle in society? Why was Louis XIV, the sun king, and his German Egonistic aristocratic henchmen loathed so much by almost all of Europe, and in Bonn especially, by the end of the 17th century? Why does Bonn have a Minster instead of a Cathedral? So many unusual questions, but Master John, a man who you don't meet every day, has sufficient answers
The rarest thing of all, though, is that if you fare well and behave yourselves, he might even sing you a song or two and wet your whistles for you with a 1516er. So do come along to the Brassert Ufer on the corner of Rheingasse (near the zebra crossing where the Köln-Düsseldorfer Rhine cruise boats depart.) on the second Friday of the month and take a refreshing walk into your own past, and don't be afeard to bring your friends and family along, as long as you are with Master John, the night watchman, you'll be safe indeed, even from the local ghosts:
