Essays in The Outernet
January 1, 2017
Volume 1 Issue 1
By David G. Johnson

The Outernet is Not a Light Switch to End Poverty

Greetings citizens of the Outernet. We live in strange times where poverty and suffering exists in plain sight of the prosperous. The main stream media appears to be designed to distract people from the reality of the world. The Internet has been a major innovation in allowing people to communicate and disseminate information and ideas. Unfortunately, the more that things change the more that they stay the same. Only the prosperous can afford the tools and education to become prosperous. I see it as an inversion of the Concentric Zone Model. If you are prosperous it is likely that your family will be prosperous and if you are not it is likely that your family won’t be prosperous. Wealth and influence will concentrate and poverty and suffering will ironically flourish. This atmosphere makes the prosperous nervous and they naturally seek to isolate themselves from the masses. They wear masks that portray them as benevolent and they make donations to charity (so long as they are tax deductible).
They form foundations and hire public relations firms in order to show what nice people that they are. The bottom line is that they are prosperous and the only thing that they pursue is more prosperity and protection of their assets. A benevolent mask is a mask reminiscent of a warrior mask, it is made to dissuade you from engaging them.

So, I don’t have much time for this first essay but I hope that I can start a conversation about using the Outernet in order to help people in need. I understand that it is not a switch that I can throw and suddenly poverty and suffering will suddenly end.
