1. Significant reductions in stress levels
Research conducted at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) of India, has documented the Art of Living program’s efficacy as a stress-management tool. Levels of cortisol, known as the “stress hormone,” decreased significantly in subjects who practiced the Sudarshan Kriya
technique. Stress is known to be a major contributing factor to violence. It has also been known to diminish an individual’s ability to execute non-violent conflict resolution strategies.
2. Normalization of sleep
The Art of Living Courses has been shown to rapidly normalize sleep disturbances, improving both the length and quality of sleep. Several EEG studies conducted at NIMHANS have documented improved REM, NREM and Stage 4 sleep architecture. Sound sleep, which gets restored with practice of the Art of Living program, reduces violent outbursts facilitating the ability to solve problems.3. *Significant reductions in anxiety
Research conducted by the Institute for Rehabilitation of the Republic of Slovenia documented significant reductions in anxiety levels within five days of learning the Art of Living program. Anxiety has long been understood to contribute to violence and to impede problem solving ability.
4. Relief from Depression
Numerous studies conducted at NIMHANS have documented the rapid effects of the Art of Living course in alleviating depression. In fact, a comparison study demonstrated that the Art of Living course is as effective as current standard treatments for depression, while being free of unwanted side effects.
Furthermore, the Art of Living course was reported to restore mental health along with personal autonomy. Depression impairs problem solving ability and can make individuals less concerned about long range consequences of their actions (including violent actions). Self-autonomy - a feeling of self-efficacy and
self sufficiency, increases self-concept and reduces the risk of violent behavior.
