This castle, probably best known as the Krak de Chevaliers (Castle of the Crusaders), was a highlight of my trip through Syria. Its condition is absolutely remarkable and the surrounding lookout impressive. Highly recommended.

I have been at Al-Hesn in January 2007. It is a spectacular place with very specific geographic location that uncover all the surrounding mountain area. Do not miss it with new Syria.

If in Syria or the Lebanon, do take a couple of days to visit Krak and the other crusader castles which inter-link through the mountains; it is spectacular and an extraordinary construction feat. Deservedly, it is a UN World Heritage site. Local hotels are either expensive or really cheap, but that's another adventure! We were there in late January, so it was cold and damp, but the views commanded showed so well why the Crusaders chose the spot - which has sight-lines to neighboring castles north and south,
