Quoted:

"For every Daniel Ellsberg, Drake, Binney, Katharine Gun, Manning or Snowden, there are thousands of civil servants who go by their daily job of spying on everybody and feeding cooked or even made-up information to the public and parliament, destroying everything we as a society pretend to care about.

"Some of them may feel favourable towards what they're doing, but many of them are able to hear their inner Jiminy Cricket over the voices of their leaders and crooked politicians – and of the people whose intimate communication they're tapping.....

"You can be part of the solution; provide trustworthy journalists – either from old media (like this newspaper) or from new media (such as WikiLeaks) with documents that prove what illegal, immoral, wasteful activites are going on where you work.

"There IS strength in numbers. You won't be the first – nor the last – to follow your conscience and let us know what's being done in our names. Truth is coming – it can't be stopped. Crooked politicians will be held accountable. It's in your hands to be on the right side of history and accelerate the process.

"Courage is contagious."

I like the way Canada handled ballot design intelligently and consistently across the nation. We could do something like that with electronic health record user interfaces. I plan to be involved in that effort. We have the opportunity to do better.

My organization (Dept of Family & Community Medicine at University of Missouri-Columbia) is doing a retreat for re-designing how we do healthcare delivery. I think we need real-world patients to participate somehow, and wonder about using a Google Hangout for that purpose. Our next action is a 4 hour retreat next Wed AM. We will have little breakout groups to tackle some discrete domains (e.g. How do we improve patient satisfaction for patients with a lot of chronic diseases who had a recent change in status, e.g. who were hospitalized and now have an office visit to follow-up).

What do you think, world?

Very cool idea.  I think it would be interesting to use the screen sharing feature of Google Hangouts to show an EMR.  You could then use the participants as a quasi-focus group.  I am really interested to see where you go w/ this!

Introducing Bandlines. A new variation of spaklines introduced by Stephen Few. I am excited to start adapting them to EHR data visualization (in lab graphs, vital sign graphs, etc).

Introduction
I'm a practicing family physician at an academic health center with 25 years of experience in full-time private practice. I've had a long-term interest in software usability, and my work mission now is to relieve physician suffering by improving EMR (electronic medical record) usability. I get chances to do that in several venues, including implementation, training, usability testing and research, evangelism, and collaborating with software development teams. I'm eager to speak to any willing audience about EMR usability.
