I've been painting for about 10 years or so (I think...), mostly self taught with many many classes taken here and there and online too.  Landscapes are my first love but I enjoy still lifes also.

Week 3 of Paint Along #19 with Johannes Vloothuis
12x16 Oil on Arches Oil Pad Paper
I used a knife on the rocks and were so much fun I was ready to make more. wink emoticon I really had to think of what I was doing with the wave/water.....finger painted in the crest/spray of the wave. And then painted the remainder. I did do a block in first of the entire painting but by the time I got to the rocks (almost last) I just plain 'ol painted them in.
I also had problems getting the waves 'eye' a proper color. I'm sure it could be better. I suppose if I'da listened to Jo's recording there might be a suggestion on what colors to use on the eye.......

This painting was done for a challenge and turned out to be quite the exercise....not easy to do at all !  It is painted after a John Singer Sargeant painting of Venice.
After the 2nd layer or so of wash I started to have problems with the paint moving and/or 'pilling' on my surface. After it dried,  I added some more value, with difficulty, and finally just threw in the towel. JSS certainly knew what he was doing! I'd like to see his painting in real life.
I do think the prep of the canvas was very helpful with creating texture.

I decided to switch things up big time this week.........JV's class (which I am going to miss) is tomorrow and I have completed the painting using the ref photo/sketch and Jo's description of how he was going to paint on Saturday.
Quite frankly I liked my underpainting better. It had more impact. I had some trouble getting the right hues and values onto the houses and still have them recede. And so I think a lot of the paint is overworked, and I compromised the value structure that I had created previously Arrrrrgh.
I look forward to seeing how Jo does his painting tomorrow. I can't tell you how many times this week I said to myself...... how Jo would do this?.....

Celia and Gary.........Yes Jo is an excellent teacher.   I take his classes online (now), and was fortunate to actually take live classes with him some years back when he still lived in Edmonton.   You can find more information on his website at--- http://improvemypaintings.com/

Hi Glen.  Really it's not so much different than photography.  It's a skill set.   Never thought I could do it either.   Then I got stubborn about it and just kept on learning, taking classes etc. and am still learning(still stubborn ie!)  <gbg>    =)

All three painted for Paint Along #18 with Johannes Vloothuis.  All classes done online.  I especially like week #2 with the bridge in it.

I have been sooooo lax about uploading my paintings into my G+ albums.  =(

Just finished on my easel (unless, of course, I find 'something')
I took the morning off and just got 'er done.  Too bad I didn't have this done earlier in the month .....I would have entered it into the Art Show.   Oh well.......next time.

What a chore this rabbit turned out to be! His ears have been in just about any position you can think of.....with DH telling me that rabbits ears don't do that in real life. <sigh> I said Bugs Bunny's ears do it.........
So compositionally I think this is wishy washy at best, I used three colors only, tried to make the landscape a bit more interesting. I was going to do his whiskers while the original paint was still wet, and then it dried 'cause I was....you know.....doing other stuff. But I do think his eye turned out well (yay me!)

Thank you All for your comments and number ones, to which I admit, I am surprised.   I guess I'm the only who has a problem with this painting. =)
I am my own worst critic.   ;-)
