My Friends Daughter wrote a amazing Essay on Pharma Virus Holistic and how drugs are being over prescribed! I was a good influence on her!

In this world, in this nation, and in this state everyone experiences problems. All societies and different kinds of people go through trials and tribulations that many times are not resolved; these situations oftentimes costs lives. Prescription drug abuse along with illicit drug abuse create complications across the nation. If people were to accept the fact that there is an actual problem, finding a solution would be inevitable. It is often difficult to experience these issues first hand and to truly understand that it is an problem but it is incredibly important to understand that it is a very relevant obstacle that needs to be resolved. Now the question is, what could solve a problem as large as prescription drug abuse?

What is the Problem?
So, what does the word “abuse” really mean? The word means “treat with cruelty or violence”; however, it can also mean “use to bad effect or use for bad purposes.” Therefore, abuse is another way of saying the “misuse” of something. What if the two words “prescription drugs” sat in front of the word abuse? There is an enormous umbrella of drugs in the United States. Under that umbrella sit the dozens of kinds of drugs in this nation. Every one of these drugs get abused on a daily basis, but there are a few in particular that grow more common in everyday abuse. Drugs are seen in movies, talked about in schools, and are part of the talk that parents have with their children early in their lives. Drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin are the talk of the town, but what about the drugs that physicians prescribe? What about the drugs that are prescribed for sprained ankles or for pain after wisdom teeth are removed? Unfortunately, prescription drugs like these are the items that are abused most often; however, they are also easily overlooked. Well, they are commonly overlooked because people incorrectly assume that if a pill is prescribed by a physician then it must be safe. That however is not the case. In fact, opioids, which are used for pain relief, are often used for many things other than the reason in which they were prescribed. Thus, this is a significant misuse or abuse of medication.

Why is it a True Problem?
If there are thousands of deaths due to something occurring in the United States, it is incredibly important for something to be done. The problem is that prescription drug abuse needs a solution. The misuse of prescription drugs is becoming very prominent in the United States of America. In the United States alone in the year 2009, 23.5 million people over the age of 12 needed treatment for the abuse of illicit drugs or alcohol (Treatment). Depressants, opioids, and many other over the counter medicines are responsible for most of the overdose deaths in the United States accounting for 45 percent compared to the overdose deaths from the use of cocaine, heroin, and meth which account for 35 percent (Watch the). Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined (Prescription). In 2011, the White House noted that 10 million people admitted to abusing prescription drugs in the year 2010 (Fuchs), and from 2009 to 2010 the total number of opioids prescribed nearly tripled from 76 million to a staggering 210 million. The risk of becoming addicted to prescription drugs increases when they are used in ways other than as prescribed (Volkow). This research supports the fact that the abuse of prescription drugs is an obvious problem that needs a solution. In an article written by Daniela Perdoma she stated, “100,000 Americans die each year from prescription drugs — that’s 270 per day, or, as you put it, more than twice as many who are killed in car accidents each day (Daniela).” In this article she took the liberty to ask an author of “Our Daily Meds” many questions regarding pharmaceutical drugs, and the answers that she received were astonishing (Daniela). There are people that are taking away their own life due to these drugs when there is no need. There is no need for this many deaths when it can all be avoided.

What is the Solution?
A solution to any public crisis is gratifying. This crisis is growing and society needs to reassure its communities surrounding that there will be an end to the madness. In the situation of drug abuse, the best reliable solution to the problem is turning away from the conventional medication system we know today to a more healthy and natural pathway. Homeopathy, or Homeopathic Medicine, is the practice of medicine that embraces a holistic, natural approach to the treatment of the sick. Turning to herbal a.k.a homeopathic medicine can be the solution to the abuse in prescription drugs. Stan Prodes, a former male nurse and now a teacher for a high school medical academy class, stated that drug abuse is “absolutely a problem (Vera).” To the question, “Do you believe homeopathic medicine is reliable?” he quickly answered, “Yes I believe it is great to have alternatives (Vera).” It is important to know that our own doctors and healthcare professionals have faith in the upcoming trends of medicine like homeopathy.

Components of Homeopathy
When any professional in the homeopathic field brings up homeopathy. There are three different principles that go along with this specific study of medicine.. These three come together to ensure a person’s health.
• Let Like Cure Likes. For the most part everyone visits a physician once a year for a health check-up. This check-up is to ensure that the patient is healthy and if not healthy, a physician will do what they can to bring back that health. In the homeopathic practice, there are “check-ups” called “homeopathic case-taking”. This “case taking” is a check up for a patient’s psychological, physical, and emotional components of the individual. If a person is completely healthy than they are on their merry way with a healthy mind, body and spirit. If not, the “healer” will assign them their own remedy.
• Minimum Doses. It seems ironic and as paradoxical as it sounds, the higher the dilution the more potent the homeopathic remedy is. Potent means the degree in which the homeopathic medicine is diluted, ultimately creating a remedy that would be more efficient for the problem. The more a medicine is diluted the minimal the dosage is.
• The Single Remedy. Most but not all homeopathic practitioners, or healers, only prescribe one remedy at a time. The single remedy is a specially prepared potentised substance selected from the animal, vegetable, or mineral kingdoms.
Once conventional medicine realizes that they have that extra side to turn to, it will be much more difficult for people to become addicted to the prescriptions harming them. All of the homeopathic medicines out there do the same things that the medications today do. The most commonly abused drugs consist of, opioids, central nervous system depressants, and stimulants (Volkow). Each and every one of these medications has an alternative. The word “wellness” plays a huge role in what homeopathy is as a whole. The word wellness means the state or condition of being in good physical and mental health. So in the practice of homeopathy, having a healthy mind leads to having a healthy body. Central nervous system depressants treat anxiety and minor sleep disorders. If a person understands the simple fact that a healthy mind leads to a healthy life, anxiety and minor sleep disorders would not even be a problem. Stimulants such as adderall help those with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or any other hyperactive disorders to focus better and tune out distractions. Amazingly enough, there are numerous amounts of all natural medicines and treatments to avoid taking most likely over prescribed stimulant drugs. Alyssa Cybulsky, a pharmacist at CVS Pharmacy in Bethlehem, PA, stated that she believed that drug abuse comes from over prescribing beginning with doctors and she also believes how quickly they prescribed a strong pain relieving medicine.“When someone sprains their back or an ankle and they are prescribed oxycodone when something like tylenol can easily fix the problem and from then on the patient becomes dependent on these medicines. (Vera)” Although she does not believe that homeopathic medicine is a reliable source she does understand the fact that the overprescribing of drugs is the reason for the abuse in this country (View on Drug Abuse).

This Solution is for Society as a Whole
It is understood that not everyone abuses the drugs prescribed to them, but why not do something for the greater good. If turning to homeopathic medicine cuts down on the amount of deaths due to drug abuse then why not make the switch. Why not make the switch when there hundreds of thousands of overdoses a year? Making the switch to homeopathy medicine encompasses various positive attributes. Not only can it avoid higher prescription abuse but it strengthens the health of all society. A society with much lower drug abuse deaths and overdoses leads to a society with more sober people. Once addicts are not longer common in everyday communities, society will be filled with happy and healthy citizens with positive and uplifting spirits. In the year 2013, an estimated 24.6 million Americans or 9.4 percent of America’s population was addicted to illicit drugs. Once the community is willing to shy away from conventional medicine there could be happiness in the entirety of a nation. There are three aspects or “principles” to homeopathy. Each of the three is well praised and very heavily practiced in this way of living and in the end is what makes the practice reliable for all the people living today.

“Not Safe?”
Of course with anything new there will be an argument. Homeopathic medicine is brand new to many people in the United States so of course it is expected for people to be skeptical. One of the most prominent opposing views of this avenue of medicine is the fact that it is not studied properly. Although yes, it is FDA approved, the FDA does not study these remedies for their effectiveness and safety. Alyssa Cybulsky had said in her interview that she stressed the fact that homeopathic medicine, “is not studied by any means.” There are many homeopathic medicine out there that have been recalled and are not an alternative to the medicine she herself carries along her numerous pharmaceutical drugs. She also stated that there are no regulations set on these kinds of medicine to even know if they are safe or not to be giving to the public. Her strong opinion may come from the fact that many homeopathic medicines are believed to be extremely diluted therefore less likely to cause harm (Vera). These products contain substantial amounts of active ingredients and therefore could cause side effects and drug interactions (NCCIH). Although this may seem like a reasonable argument there is an easier solution. Just a simple change from the FDA can ensure the fact that everyone finds homeopathic medicine safe and a reliable source of change. If the FDA were to further study into the medicines that are made up by homeopathic practitioners this would no longer be an argument.
