In non-Trump news, the excessive rain we're having in northern California this winter (to compensate for the years of drought, I guess?) is causing an evacuation in an area ~75 miles north of Sacramento, due to fears of the Oroville dam's auxiliary spillway failing. If the dam does fail, in addition to flooding the area, we would be losing one of California's largest water reservoirs.

(Also this weekend: the rains caused a mudslide onto highway 17, severely impeding traffic between the Bay Area and the Santa Cruz / Monterrey areas: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/New-Rockslide-Shuts-Down-Highway-17-on-Summit-Road-413423843.html)

ETA: The LA Times has a great summary of why this is happening, including this quote:
With northern Sierra precipitation levels tracking ahead of the wettest year on record so far this winter, Oroville managers have a nerve-racking several months ahead of them. “There’s a lot of snow up there,” said Bill Croyle, acting director of the Department of Water Resources.

The snowpack in the northern Sierra, which includes the Feather River watershed, is 150% of normal for the date. Statewide it is 180% of average.

One of the most attractive features of cats is that contentment is their default state. [...] Life itself is enough for them.

I see folks in my circles asking about getting more actively involve in what is going on in the country. Here is an overview of ways to do that, and some concrete pointers: https://www.facebook.com/d1ne3r/posts/1093947837381451

“The gap between how men perceive gender equality at work vs. how women who actually live it every day feel about it is alarming,” says kununu CEO Moritz Kothe. “As a male CEO developing a team and culture, these findings have made me increasingly aware of how we support all of our employees and provide the right foundation to attract and retain the best people.”

"But what I want to do is I want to foster a technology culture in which a high value is placed on understanding and being explicit about your biases about what you’re leaving out, so that computers are used to bring out the richness of the world instead of forcibly overwriting it."
