Meet Jessica Higgs, director of Bound Feet Blues

Jessica Higgs was the first of the creative team to come on board the production after writer/ performer Yang-May Ooi, directing the showcase performance of Bound Feet Blues in Oct 2014. She is at the helm again taking the show to the next level for the 3 week run of the full production in Nov/ Dec later this year.

I've just learnt that I'll be sharing the stage with Julie Cheung-Inhin at the Papergang event, Echo, at the Bush Theatre on 20 Oct. I'm thrilled! We went to see her show No More Lotus Flower the other week and she was terrific exposing the frustrating truth about being an East Asian actor in modern Britain - I'm looking forward to catching up with her and also seeing the other artists who will be involved in the event!

These tiny lotus shoes at the V&A Pleasure and Pain exhibition sent a chill through me. They look smaller than 3 inches and were made for women in ancient China whose feet had been broken and bound into that tiny shape for beauty.

I performed the first 5 mins of Bound Feet Blues last night to a packed audience at The Story Party. That first scene takes us back to Oxford in 1983 when I was 20, walking to a ball in a slinky red cheongsam and black stilettos with "Josh". Here's a pic from that night...

The opening line of Bound Feet Blues is "It's a beautiful summer evening in Oxford in 1983". Hugh Grant was also at Oxford at the same time as I was - but we moved in different social circles, otherwise my student years might have been more decadent than they were....!

Elegant stilettos for every day wear. Could you run errands in these? #BoundFeetBlues

Trying to write my family history took me decades of failure as I found myself stuck within the traditional memoir narrative. It was only when I started to tell the stories out loud that Bound Feet Blues, the story performance and the related book got traction and suddenly, it all came together.

Take a look at this article for further thoughts on failure: "Failure Is Inevitable. What Matters Is How You Deal With It." - Accidental Creative
