Video allows me to capture reality in a spontaneous and intuitive way. I seek to directly capture reality and represent it truthfully, and to question the relationship of reality with cinema.
I think of video as my way to window into Human experience and our relation to the world – spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. Be it dramatic, documentary, or experimental, each time I make a video it is an expression and a critique of my experience in the world. I am trying to explore how our experience shapes our lives, thoughts and beliefs and video is a way to explore any idea, big or small, and to explore it as a collective, audience and artist alike.
I work with various forms of video, including VHS, and digital 8 but my work is heavily grounded in HD video. The ability to work in an entirely digital world allows me to easily explore many different versions of the same piece, and look at my editing computer like a sketch book: a place to explore.
I enjoy the entire process of conception, shooting, editing, and work on every piece of the process closely. Watching the video come together and how it evolves over the long process of making it is a wonderful experience. Especially as video is very collaborative and I get to go through the process and form a bond with the subjects/performers/crew and get to work with so many great people at the same time.
I believe making apiece is much akin to my training in Chinese Martial arts and is a very Zen like experience. The Mind body connection is very important to my work, as I am able to see the camera as an extension of myself, not just a simple tool in my hands.
