Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice

Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.

1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.

2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

Reporter. Social media geek. American Cancer Society volunteer. Lover of all things Pittsburgh. Apple guy. "Days of our Lives" addict. Scion driver.
Introduction
How yinz doin'?

That's Pittsburghese for, "How are you (or 'you all') doing?"

I'm Bobby Cherry, a Pittsburgh born and raised guy who works as a reporter for Sewickley Herald and Trib Total Media.

I have a passion for reporting, dedication to volunteering for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, addiction to “Days of our Lives” and love of everything Pittsburgh (as if that wasn't made clear yet.

The news…
For two consecutive years, I received awards for investigative reporting on corruption in suburban Pittsburgh, and for my newspaper’s use of social networking tools.

I don’t limit reporting to the printed word; I shoot and edit video for my newspaper’s online sites, manage the newspaper’s presence across social media platforms and report breaking news online.

I handle these responsibilities while still performing beat reporting, which includes coverage of municipal meetings and local businesses, and I dabble in feature writing.

Volunteering…
My love for reporting is matched by my dedication to volunteer work fighting cancer. I serve as a lead volunteer and event organizer for the American Cancer Society’s East Central Division Relay For Life.

For two years, I served as a training leader, spearheading training activities across Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I have volunteered with the American Cancer Society for more than 15 years as a division trainer, region leadership member, community event organizer, fundraiser organizer, team captain and participant.

And a little more about me…
When I'm not reporting or volunteering, I'm likely crushing Goombas and Koopa Troopas in any of the Mario Bros. games (preferably Super Mario 3 or Wii versions), creating metropolises in SimCity, building homes in the Sims, learning about Pittsburgh history, critiquing what I view as “infotainment” reporting on local television news, watching “Days of our Lives” and searching for the perfect slice of pizza.

If you want to know more, please check out my website, BobbyCherry.com.

Please note, this Google+ profile is not operated by Trib Total Media, but it is a reflection of my work through Trib Total Media, the American Cancer Society and other ventures.
