On July 26 and 27, Nunn School Professor Adam Stulberg and Associate Professor Margaret E Kosal participated in the 2017 US STRATCOM Deterrence Symposium in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Kosal spoke on the implications of the 3rd offset strategy, the DoD’s strategy to enable asymmetric capabilities with strategic implications, for deterrence. She spoke about the historical role of new and emerging technologies and discussed two case studies, human performance modification including gene-editing and nanomaterials for advanced bio-inspired camouflage.

In Dr. Stulberg’s presentation, he addressed regional perspectives on strategic stability. What it means in terms of nuclear and other vital security dynamics among key regional nuclear states? How well do core tenets of the traditional paradigm (derived from the US-Soviet Cold War experience) travel across these contexts? What are the implications for the relevance of numbers versus policies/political relationships, assured destruction, and U.S. nuclear posture?

Over the summer undergrad student and member of the Nunn School’s 21st Century Security Challenges VIP Team, Matthew Ansley presented independent research at the Naval Future Force Science and Technology (S&T) Expo. Hosted by the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and held in Washington, D.C., is the premier S&T event for the Navy and Marine Corps, drawing several thousand attendees.

Ansley presented research on the future applications of autonomous and non-autonomous unmanned aircraft (AUAV and UAV) unmanned aerial vehicles in naval combat and potential strategic and policy implications for the U.S. Navy. This technology has rapidly progressed over the last few years and can provide capabilities previously unavailable to militaries, especially navies. The research was developed and conducted as part of Nunn School Associate Professor Dr. Margaret E. Kosal's VIP research group. As part of the Expo, he was able to attend lectures from RADM David Haan, Chief of ONR; ADM Richardson, current Chief of Naval Operations; and other figures from throughout the defense industry. He was also able to interact with professionals from the DoD, including the deputy director of DARPA's Tern program, a UAV project operating in the same vein as Matthew's research.

The Naval Future Force S&T Expo showcases some of the U.S. Navy’s and Marine Corp’s latest technologies and brings together military leaders, technology innovators, and academics from around the world to share information; discuss research opportunities; and build partnerships between the Navy, Marine Corps, industry and academia.

His participation in the S&T conference was partially supported by the GT Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP).
