Went to the Food Truck Round-up at Coffee Buddha today. Got a Braised Pork biscuit with cheese and pepper jam from Wise County Biscuits.

So good.

Someone noticed recently that the HP Lovecraft poem "Nemesis" has the same meter as Billy Joel's "Piano Man". This recording of it has been making the rounds the last couple of days, and I find it rather funny (and pretty well done, even if there are some pronunciation stumbles. Which is understandable, looking at the source material):

I am really, really tempted to buy this shirt. If only I could get it here in time for the Westboro Baptist Church folks that are supposed to show up here on Thursday.

This is a really long essay, but I think it's worth reading. There's a LOT to unpack in it, and I'm going to be thinking about it for a while. Notes on intersectionality, and 'being a good ally', and 'what's wrong with being angry?', and admitting it's ok to be wrong, and more.

One of the things that stood out to me is the difference between criticism and disinterest.

+Kee Hinckley It was suggested to me to pass this along to you, as it seems relevant to your interests.

There are a few other articles about this as well, but nothing near the noise made about the "hero" McCain who voted against his constituents:

The OTHER senator with cancer that came to vote (against, for the record) on the ACA repeal. Not seeing as much coverage as for that other guy...
<sarcasm>I wonder what might be different here? </sarcasm>

Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. -Carl Sagan, astronomer and author (1934-1996)

EASY WAY TO HELP PROTECT OBAMACARE:
Paul Ryan's office is conducting a survey hoping to show a popular mandate to repeal the ACA. It's automated and quick. Here's what to do:
1) Call (202) 225 - 0600
2) Wait through 30 seconds of silence for recording to start
3) You will get prompted by the survey
4) Press 2 to participate
5) Listen through GOP propaganda message
6) Press 1 to register your support for the ACA

(PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS INTO A STATUS UPDATE OF YOUR OWN - If you don't, only our mutual friends will see it. )
The survey is back up at Paul Ryan's office. It's a painless thing to do - don't even have to speak to a human!

I don't even know how to comment on something like this.  If you can help, please do...
TL;DR: The Homeless Cat Management Team is asking for fosters, as well as donations to help support the care of nearly 40 cats removed from abandoned house in Brookline.  Information on donation at the bottom.

Background
For those who haven't heard, on Monday and Tuesday, Homeless Cat Management Team, alerted by a neighbor, joined with police and humane officers to remove 39 emaciated cats from a home in Brookline.  In addition, one dead kitten was found in the basement, and 11 more were found in the trash.  The home owner had moved out before Easter.

Neighbors, alerted to the situation by at least one starving cat who'd squeezed out a window, had been trying to feed the cats by dumping food through an open window - the only reason any were still alive.

The cats had been interbreeding, probably for generations.  Many of the cats are polydactyl; some have deformed paws as the result of polydactyl cats interbreeding.  Most are adults.  One lone small kitten survived, along with several older kittens, approximately 6 months old, who are barely 2 lbs (the size of a 2-month old).

The Homeless Cat Management Team in Pittsburgh is caring for 33 of the cats (a neighbor adopted the heroic window-escapee, and Animal Friends took 6).  Most of the surviving cats are emaciated and filthy but relatively healthy considering their situation.  HCMT isn't a shelter; their mission is primarily TNR, along with fostering and adopting out trapped friendly cats.  As such, they are not particularly outfitted to house 30+ cats.

How You Can Help
If you're in the Pittsburgh area and can foster one of these poor animals in your spare room, laundry room, extra bathroom, or a large dog crate, let me know, and I can get you a Pittsburgh CAT fostering application.

If you cannot foster, please consider donating to help defer the costs of care. Go to http://www.homelesscat.org/donate-to-hcmt.html and donate through JustGive or PayPal, or send donations directly to our Paypal address, cathomeless@gmail.com. You can also donate from our Amazon wishlist: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/37Q5P2O650QOV/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_ws_Renkxb0X31ZH7

If you cannot foster or donate, I hope you will share this in the hope of reaching others who can. We very much appreciate anything you can do!
