Grindr dying would be great for gay culture as it means people would have to interact in real life in a social context and not limit who they interact with and be attracted to or connect with on a human level based on narrow-minded material descriptors.

Would we? Or would we just find different ways to not engage?

In 2001, comics maven Joey Manley (RIP) told me that the lowest-selling category of comics and graphic novels are anthologies since people don’t want to pay for one story by a creator they don’t like to read one story by a creator they do like. This was a bummer as I had always been a fan of anthologies. The biggest confidence boost I received as a writer, after struggling for ten years, was having a short story included in Best American Gay Fiction 1996. (This story has subsequently been anthologized three other times since then.)

Given that anthologies are the lowest-selling category of books in graphic novels (for all trade paperback, hardcover and pamphlet categories), I wonder why the pattern of launching a small comics press with an anthology persists when it’s almost completely dead as a practice for anyone but presses that have a prestige charter and the capital to spend on it.

I suppose the persistence of comics anthologies by new presses has something to do with imitating the pattern of how underground comics presses started back in the 70s – with anthology titles like Gay Comix. Maybe it persists because they create a sense of “strength in numbers” that allows people with the privilege of social capital and networking connections (what a friend of mine calls “Tumblr-Famous”) to win Kickstarters and then flop in the real marketplace when the perceived demand isn’t actual demand. (Sidebar: I expect booksellers are starting to burn out on carrying dead-on-arrival Kickstarter books.)

When the rubric for anthologization is something akin to “crony canon management”…well, I suppose there’s a place in the world for those anthologies. Ludicrous misuses of critical theory to make claims of representativeness and/or inclusiveness in anthology introductions are a rare amusement, and I cherish them when they come along.

+Furr Bear _Meatmen_ is important historically and also a great expression about the difference between arbitrary compilation and editorial taste because it was so hit-and-miss.

My inability to book a book signing in Nashville (where Bo Revel lives) for PARDNERS (which is set in Nashville) does not diminish our accomplishment. But it is disappointing that I could not find a bookstore or comic store that would host us.
