Same here, if contractors or service providers are not getting good reviews, they cannot blame you; they can only do better.

I havent used their service but they seemed very pushy, and made me feel that if I dont use their service my bussines will fail and have zero clients and my life will be miserable. Kept calling me few times and sending e-mails.

My experiences since joining HomeStars a number of years ago have been extremely positive. While living in the downtown Toronto area postcards of “contractors” were delivered daily, why I never knew because very rarely if you called one would they bother to return your call. In that house we needed to get new eaves troughs and downspouts; a requirement was to direct the downspout water away from the house. I called two companies; one I found high on page 1 of Google search results and one I chose from among those top rated in HomeStars - what a difference in experiences and professionalism. The company found through search results, when presented with my desire to route the water from the downspouts away from the house, responded with “well when you figure out how you want to do it let me know” and left a half-page quote in the mailbox. The company I selected through HomeStars initiated that part of the conversation before I could even raise it, and immediately laid out a logical solution, providing a complete professional quote upon completing the visit. People should recognize that not all online reviews are created equal, whether it be TripAdvisor, Yelp or HomeStars or even Google. A good practice is to read several reviews – is there a theme and does the business respond to their customers and what’s the tone of their response – if it don’t feel right then it’s best to move on. If it looks good, do some additional due diligence and then make your decision. I’ve found HomeStars works to keep false reviews off the system having personally been asked a series of questions with a request for proof of the contract prior to posting a review. Whether it’s a new business or I’m the first to review, I’ve not experienced any issue with posting the information or creating the business. That doesn’t guarantee that someone doesn’t figure out how to game the system, someone always will, but I take comfort that HomeStars actively works to prevent them. There must be a business model to this site as there is with every review site. Through using the site, it appears for a business to be listed on HomeStars without any bells/whistles/hyperlinks there’s no charge, yet we as customers can still post/read reviews. When as a business owner you would like to use what appears to be a variety of tools on how to engage with your customers more actively, then there’s a cost associated with it. Link to your website & social media, the ability to respond to customer reviews must have a cost associated with it. That makes sense all the way around – businesses work with whatever is in their means yet customers can still post reviews and we all get access to the information. As a customer my hope would be for businesses to recognize the value we’re placing on a site like HomeStars in making our home reno / updating decisions and actively engage with reviewers to improve their business. Having just been at the Home Show, reliving my regrets for using a vendor we met there last year who was displaying again this year, it occurred to me. You can buy the perception of being a company providing solid products with industry leading customer service in a 10x10 space and make it believable. My experience with top HomeStars performers I’ve chosen to do business with has not let me down yet. I’m about to begin another round of reno’s with a budget in the mid 5 figures - if I don’t see the company in HomeStars, with a minimum of 9.0, they won’t even get an invitation to the table.

I am happy to say that my experience with Homestars over almost 10 years has been positive even when my review of a company was not. Any time I have dealt with a member of the Homestars team they have been professional and reliable. I have found companies on Homestars based on the reviews and am pleased to report that those companies were reputable and consistent with the reviews posted online. I have also added quite a few businesses that were referred to me by friends and family. I am surprised to see so many low reviews for a company that I hold in high regard. I believe the vast majority of reviews on Homestars are posted by people just like me and not people with ulterior motives. Homestars will continue to be my Amazon for local reputable businesses. Keep up the great work Homestars team!

HomeStars is a review site that allows homeowners a fantastic experience finding a qualified contractor. This is their only goal, and is the way they can build and maintain trust and loyalty with homeowners. It is nearly impossible for companies with 10 star ratings and many reviews to create fraudulent success stories. However homeowners must do their due diligence when looking at companies on HomeStars with limited 10 star reviews and must pay careful attention to dates as they may have fraudulent reviews to appear legitimate. The truth about HomeStars is that they are trying to do their best to help legitimize honest companies. However, crooked companies and tradesmen will do anything to deceive their customers and attempt to appear legitimate amongst a group of skilled professionals. This allows them to steal market share and despite everyone's best effort, fool HomeStars just like they fool their poor customers! Please understand that crooks work hard to trick people. Here are the best steps to help find the best company. #1 Check HomeStars. #2 Do your research, does the company have an address? #3 Is it a real address with a showroom, google street view it, or go visit. #4 When searching on the internet, do not trust Google Ad words, they are for companies that can't rank organically in that area search because they are pretending to be local! #5 Call and speak with an employee, if you get a call center hang up it's a scam. I feel for HomeStars as they are trying to create a reputable review site, yet unscrupulous companies will always find a way to corrupt the site. HomeStars is a great starting point, as it eliminates 90% of the terrible companies out there, but you as the consumer must do some research before you buy. Hopefully the aforementioned tips will help guide you towards building a great relationship with a qualified and experienced contractor!

Thank you for the review Chris. It is true there are companies that try to cheat the system and we work to improve our fraud detection systems all the time. We take the authenticity of reviews very seriously since faking a review is a form of deception that is worse than false advertising. Thank you for the tips to homeowners looking to hire a company. I completely agree that HomeStars is a good starting point and it is important for homeowners to follow all the due diligence they normally would, what you suggest above plus also checking that licences and/or accreditation and insurance are in good standing. The ratings on this website are not reliable, they remove negative reviews if the business owners do not like them. they are bias in rejecting reviews. Businesses with F ratings on BBB have ten star ratings on this site. found the ratings of contractors and businesses far from truth. All contractors I hired for the renovation of my condo had 10 stars ratings on the web site and almost all failed to provide acceptable services. I think there should be other ways to verify authenticity of the reviewers than just a valid email address to prevent fake reviews and ratings.

Hi Shirin - I am very sorry you had a bad experience with the companies you hired on HomeStars. I urge you to take a few minutes and write reviews on them. Or at the very least, email us directly at contact@homestars.com if you think any reviews you read on a company profile are suspicious. We do investigate these tips. Kind regards, Nancy Peterson Founder.

Oasis is a professional company with reasonable pricing. The level of skill and customer service is far above what I normally would expect. They took care of the design aspects and provided multiple options that I could choose from. I would highly recommend going with them for any concrete jobs.

Overall OK. There's some Companies that have good reviews on Homestars, but then you can't get them to contact you back (maybe because they are too busy because of their positive Homestar reviews?). However, I feel that Contractors should at least contact you back to tell you they are too busy rather than just ignoring you. Just a professional courtesy item, in my humble opinion. Also, I know of vendors who force customers to give them a perfect star rating to obtain a discount on the purchases. This helps the customer who just purchased, but does not help future customers who potentially get "tricked" by an overly skewed positive rating.

I was looking for a plumber to get some work done quickly and I was not looking forward to the experience, expecting mediocre work and/or an outrageous price. I called someone a friend recommended but he was busy. I went online, found Homestars, browsed the listings and found a bunch with great reviews. I called 5 in total. Three said that they could not make my timeline and two said that they were able to and I had the job done the next day. The guy that ultimately did the work was very polite, quoted what I found to be a fair price and did a great job. Thank you Homestars for connecting us. Way better than I expected.
