Women in Ground Combat Units: Where’s the Data?

SparksInTexas: Don't have all the answers but I can think of a few that will help mitigate some problems:

1) court martial both parties who are having sex. zero tolerance on soldiers having sex or relationships with other soldiers even if they aren't in the same unit. You don't have the same freedoms when you are active duty as you do as a civilian. It will get around eventually that it will no longer be tolerated.

2) 100% requirement that all females use implantable birth control that lasts up to 3 years.

3) Females must request permission to get pregnant as it is a staffing issue. If they get pregnant without permission (remember they are using a birth control method that is FAR superior to oral hormones or condoms) then they are investigated to see if they sabotaged their implant and if so then they are court martialed.

4) Real life standards. If women can't carry the same backpack load as the men and their weapon on a patrol then they can't be in special forces /ground forces. There are still lots of openings in Psy-Ops, cavalry, artillery, fighter jets, door to door operations particularly in areas where females are secluded from society, etc.

5) Education about rape and emphasis that rapes are to be reported immediately and rape kits available with all medical units. As one person commented privates aren't very bright so you have to pound it into them constantly that they will be court martialed and serve time if they have sex with fellow soldiers. The nuances of what is rape and what is consent are beyond some people but NO SEX EVER is pretty clear.

If having combat experience wasn't so critical for military promotions and political office then this wouldn't be an issue but it is. Some adjustments will be required and women may not end up in all positions but those that can and want to shouldn't be stopped just because some men and women have sex. It may even be that eventually women who want to serve in the ground forces take testosterone to overcome the physical aspect. The male/female aspect will come with enforcement and time. As a society we are still in transition about the place of women in society.
