Does having multiple pages or posts targeting the same keyword really confuse search engines??

No, although this is a common misconception.

The idea behind this argument is that it becomes hard for a search engine to determine which page should rank for the keyword, and that this could even result in neither page ranking - but this is usually incorrect!

With advanced data and algorithms, search engines are able to determine what is on individual pages and understand what these pages are about.

But, what does happen is that sometimes what a search engine deems to be the most relevant page might not match what you consider to be the best and most relevant page!

This is why it is so difficult to get product pages to rank for information queries!
