The Adelaide Central Market turns 150 on 23 January 2019. Formerly known as The City Market, it opened for business in the early hours of Saturday, January 23, 1869. Back then the site between Gouger and Grote streets was nothing but a vacant allotment surrounded by a fence and a couple of gas lights. More than 500 people attended the first market day and by 6am all stock was sold. From that day forth, farmers from across Adelaide rode into town with horse and dray to sell produce at the new market. The official opening was held a year later on January 22, 1870.
