The India Edition of Two Scoops of Django is now available. I write on the Two Scoops Press blog about why it has special significance to us.

I hand-painted this art print in watercolor, which will be raffled off as a prize at PyCon Philippines 2014. The painting shows the various logging levels, as applied to ice cream. See a larger photo here. This was part of Two Scoops Press’ in-kind…

Please teach AngularJS directives in Ice Cream, so I can feel confident that I understand the scope options :)

The closest that most people have come to having proper old-fashioned American hot fudge is a fast food ice cream sundae or a store-bought microwaveable bottle of hot fudge topping. You might not be aware that it’s possible to do much better. But it is. …

+Daniel Greenfeld and I have secretly been writing a technical book called Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.5.

We are happy to say that the secret's out now. The first alpha release of the book is now public and available at http://django.2scoops.org/.

It's over 200 pages and took hundreds of hours to put together. It's available as a DRM-free PDF. The print version will be released once the book comes out of beta.

We anticipate hitting the "thousands of hours" milestone before the final release. Writing a book like this is much more work than we had anticipated, and we're still hoping to squeeze in many more illustrations and code snippets, not to mention fix any issues that anyone find. But we are super proud of what we've created and hope it'll be useful to a lot of folks!

One of my largest open source projects, Cookiecutter, has surpassed the 700-star milestone. In case you aren’t familiar with it, Cookiecutter is a utility for generating projects from project templates. It is language-agnostic, and there are boilerplate…

My and +Daniel Greenfeld's significantly revised and expanded 1.6 edition of Two Scoops of Django is now out.

It's available on Amazon and through twoscoopspress.org. (Tip: check shipping rates on both sites. In a lot of cases Amazon is cheaper, especially if you have Amazon Prime.)

DjangoCon Europe 2013 will go down in history as one of the best Python conferences ever. Congratulations to +Ola Sendecka and +Ola Sitarska, two women Python developers who were much of the driving force behind the conference as core team leaders.

Photos of my and +Daniel Greenfeld's art installation, "The Colony of Lost, Long-Forgotten Rainbows," are now up at http://bit.ly/YYmE8E

We built a giant assemblage of rainbows, with mountain ranges floating around in different places. It spanned 3 walls in the center space of the Hive Gallery in downtown LA.

We took down the show last night. It was sad to see it go and know that it will never exist again. But carrying giant rainbows across the street was fun.

Thanks, Ian! We've been thinking a lot about how to do something similar outdoors. I'm going to see if multiple coats of polyurethane on the wood will hold up in our yard. Cement board is a bit hard to cut precisely, but maybe a coarser-cut version on cement board will be nice.

Story

Software engineer, author, illustrator, artist
Introduction
I'm co-author of Two Scoops of Django, a book about best practices with the Django web framework. I'm also principal at Cartwheel Web, where I work with Python and Django all day.

I am also a fine artist and found-object sculptor.  I draw digital vector illustrations of oranges, create landscapes and illusions with code, and sculpt rainbows out of tires, wood, and concrete.
