Carole Vernier had a smoky voice, a throaty laugh and an extra-dry wit, a combination that made her the perfect backstop for Herb Caen. Ms. Vernier, who served as The Chronicle columnist’s assistant until his death in 1997, was found deceased in her Bush Street apartment in San Francisco this week. Two pedestrians were struck by blow darts while walking across the Golden Gate Bridge Friday, the California High Patrol said. The CHP took both darts as evidence and sent them to be tested for harmful chemicals. The incident is under investigation and officers are seeking video footage of the crime.

Introduction
Ron was born in 1941 and raised in San Francisco. He lived on Bernal Heights, in the The Mission, and in Noe Valley. A graduate of James Lick Jr.High and Mission High he also attended Polytechnic High School for two years. He played baseball and the trombone while in high school. Due to a problem at Poly Ron transferred in his senior year to Mission High and graduated from there in January 1959. The Mission High band which Ron now played for played the SF Giants welcome parade in 1958 on the back of a flatbed truck.
