There are no other known examples in medicine of one normal organ system turning into another; only Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). There are currently no effective treatments or a cure for FOP.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) progression varies from person to person, is unpredictable and often accompanied by painful tumor-like swellings. Knocks and bumps can accelerate FOP progression. Any injection is high-risk, including immunizations. Even viral illnesses can cause a “flare-up” of bone growth.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) affects 1 in 2 million people. There are just over 800 confirmed cases worldwide. There are no ethnic, racial or gender patterns to who is impacted by FOP.

One of the most important findings of the research work donors have helped fund was the discovery of ACVR1, the FOP gene, on April 23, 2006. As we celebrate this critical finding, we hope you will join us in raising $10k for the 10th Anniversary!

A generous donor has stepped forward and if we raise
$10K through this campaign during the month of April 2016,
they will match it with an additional $10K!

Don’t forget to invite your family and friends who want to see treatments and a cure for FOP to participate as well.

The International FOP Association (IFOPA) was founded in 1988 by Jeannie Peeper, a young woman with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), who had never met anyone else with the disease. This isolation was typical before IFOPA was formed, and Jeannie’s goal was to bring people with FOP together. Today, the IFOPA is the umbrella organization for people with FOP all over the world and the place to come for education and support.

People with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) appear normal at birth except for congenital malformation of the big toes which are generally discounted as a cosmetic issue. FOP is misdiagnosed over 90% of the time. Biopsies and surgery cause explosive FOP progression.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is one of the rarest and most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine. FOP causes bone to form in muscles, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue. Bridges of this extra bone develop across joints, progressively restricting movement and forming a second skeleton that imprisons the body in bone. FOP results in a healthy mind locked inside a frozen body.
