New Home Office passport checks to start in 3 weeks time from April 8th - the Wednesday after Easter- when every tourist leaving the UK have their passports checked at ferry points for the first time in twenty years. The checks will double the amount of time it takes to check a car with a family of four, prompting concerns that queues will build up out of ferry ports, blocking major roads. The problems are particularly acute at Dover which handles 60 per cent of Britain’s ferry traffic with the Continent, with 50 sailings a day. The ferry companies said they were “concerned about the queues of vehicles that will be caused on busy days and are in discussions with the Home Office to devise an arrangement before then for relieving excessive queues”. The exit checks are being introduced on the same day at other ports and the Channel Tunnel, where the operator Eurotunnel has also raised concerns about the likelihood of long queues forming.

New Changes to Passport Applications in UK

If you apply for a UK Passport for the first time you will now be required to attend an interview with the Identity and Passport Service (IPS). The application service will take at least 6 weeks and you should not book any travel until you have received your passport.

The HM Passport Office also warns against using copycat websites who charge additional fees when you can just as easily go direct.

Do You Know The European Emergency Number?

Would you know which number to call for the ambulance, Fire Brigade or police when travelling in an EU country?

Well thankfully a new EU Initiative has meant there is now just one number to call for emergency services in the EU and that is 112.

No need to look any other number up just remember 112.

So have you got any plans for next years holiday. At Ferryonline we have released all the latest 2014 sailing schedules for ferries to France, Ireland, England, Spain and across Scandinavia. For some of the best prices it really is worth looking now. :)

Brittany Ferries have advised us that due to weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay the ferry sailing today due to depart from Santander to Portsmouth at 15.15 will now depart at 18.00 and will arrive tomorrow in Plymouth at 16.00. The ship will then depart from Plymouth to Santander (rather than Portsmouth) at 19.30 for its return journey.
