What do you plan to do more of in 2016? For me, some more #hiking. This was from a 2015 trip to the #Dolomites, exploring the Alta Via 1 and 2 with @holimites.

I've just joined Instagram under the name Hikerwriter, and I'll be posting a full range of hiking, outdoors, and other travel photos there -- each with a haiku describing some noteworthy part of the experience. I've been writing haiku in my travel journals for years, and I've always wanted to mix the tiny tight poems with photographs.... A picture being worth a thousand words, or, perhaps, it's that a tight 17 syllables can illuminate a picture,.  Please follow me @Hikerwriter.

Do you have an adventurer on your holiday shopping list? America's Great Hiking Trails was awarded the gold medal for travel books at the Lowell Thomas Awards in travel journalism, given out this week at the Society of American Travel Writers convention is Las Vegas. The book made last December's New York Times bestsellers list  in travel books, and was the IndieFab "Book of the year" in adventure and recreation books. A beautiful coffee table book about America's national scenic trails, with photos by Bart Smith.
