Baseball has lost an icon and a true ambassador of the game. My condolences to the Gwynn family, the San Diego Padres, and their fans.

RIP Tony Gwynn
Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, the greatest Padres player and arguably the best Major League hitter of the latter part of the 20th century, has passed away. Gwynn, who was 54, had been battling salivary gland cancer.

Why do I have a bad feeling Dave Montgomery is going to screw this up somehow?

Archive footage of the 1919 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. The Reds wound up winning the series 5 games to 3 (the series was best of 9 at this time). It shortly came out that the White Sox had actually conspired to throw the World Series in the infamous "Black Sox Scandal."

They had great pitching to begin with and now this?  One thing if I remember right though is that  Jeff Samardzija the last couple years has fallen off in the second half of the season.  All said though, great trade for the A's

I don't understand why, literally, everyone else was able to see this coming except for Phillies management. Just completely, absolutely inexcusable and completely preventable. Sigh...it's gonna be a long 5 years (minimum).

Ruben amaro thinks he knows better than everyone else. Even though every year our record got worse. Won the ws then lost it then lost the nlcs then lost the nlds then was .500 then below .500 since then

Josh Beckett threw a no-hitter against my Philadelphia Phillies today. If there's a silver lining to all this, I have a MLB.com account, so I get a coupon for a free pizza!

...sigh.......

Wendy Thurm from FanGraphs provides an interesting angle to the Tommy John epidemic that I hadn't heard before or even considered myself. And I'm an accountant :/

Personally, I think there should be some set standard for how hard a young pitcher can throw (for instance, no more than 80mph for 14-16 or similar*) and how many months of the year they can throw. These kids are blowing out their elbows way too soon, and it's costing them financially and health-wise.

*I'm not a coach/scientist/doctor, so I don't know what actually is the appropriate pitch speed for young pitchers to throw; I'm simply throwing hypothetical numbers out there.

Friendly reminder to pay attention when you're sitting down the lines. This guy's lucky his head isn't pointing inward.
