Less aircraft noise and lower fuel consumption – three days of test flights in Frankfurt with the DLR #ATRA research aircraft for a new active noise abatement project

Reducing aircraft #noise over residential areas while saving kerosene – this dual improvement is the aim of a joint research project being conducted by #DLR and the Umwelt- und Nachbarschaftshauses (UNH) in Kelsterbach. During three days, from 26 to 28 September, DLR, using its A320 Advanced Technology Research Aircraft will be testing the Low Noise Augmentation System, a pilot assistance system for noise-optimised landing approaches.

#DLR and #Airbus Defence and Space sign contract for design and construction of METimage #satellite instrument

METimage, a new satellite instrument for weather and climate forecasting, is now entering its final phase. On 20 September 2016, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and Airbus Defence and Space signed an agreement for the design, construction and testing of the radiometer. The signing took place in the presence of Tobias Miethaner, Head of the Department Digital Society at the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) at DLR's offices in Berlin. "METimage will enable climate monitoring and weather forecasting to be done with unprecedented levels of quality," stated Gerd Gruppe, Member of the DLR Executive Board responsible for the Space Administration. "Both are important pieces of information, not just for citizens, but also for many industrial sectors, such as energy, agriculture and transport. METimage is therefore infrastructure for tomorrow." Furthermore, during the signing ceremony, a Cooperation Agreement between DLR and +EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, for the integration of METimage into the European weather satellite system #EUMETSAT Polar System - Second Generation (EPS-SG) was confirmed.

Fine-tuning the flaps – low-noise approaches to Frankfurt tested in a simulator

Landing is one of the most labour-intensive stages of a flight. To help the pilots produce the lowest possible amount of noise in complex manoeuvres during the approach phase, #DLR has developed the Low Noise Augmentation System (LNAS) pilot assistance system. The system shows the pilot exactly when each manoeuvre should be carried out via a display on the flight deck.

Research into user requirements

Four days and four cases that pose a threat to maritime #security – in several scenarios that took place between 5 and 9 September 2016, the #EMSec joint project was able to successfully demonstrate research findings from the last three years. In order to gain optimal and real-time insight into the hijacking of a ferry or even the pollution of waters with harmful substances, scientists and their industry partners combined several data sources: satellite images from space, airborne camera pictures, and also shipping signals, all of which were entered into a system that combined and presented them in real time.

DLR fire detection satellite BIROS successfully releases BEESAT-4 picosatellite into space

On 9 September 2016 at 13:00 CEST, the BIROS (Bi-Spectral Infrared Optical System) fire detection satellite developed and built by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) released BEESAT-4 (Berlin Educational and Experimental Picosatellite) into space 515 kilometres above the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago. The cubic satellite with sides 10 centimetres long was developed and built by staff and students at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) and was supported by the DLR Space Administration with funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie; BMWi).

Was there an ocean on #Mars?

A network of huge fractures covers Utopia Planitia – a buried impact basin measuring 2000 kilometres in the Martian Northern Lowlands, which was the destination of the United States Viking 2 lander in 1976. These surface structures, which are referred to as polygons, would suggest that there was once an ocean here.

The images shown here were acquired on 21 June 2016 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera operated by #DLR on board the European #MarsExpress spacecraft.

DLR at #InnoTrans2016: 'Talking' rails, an innovative crash concept and the train design of the future

Researchers from #DLR will be showcasing current research projects with the objective of making rail #transport faster, more efficient, safer and more comfortable at InnoTrans, the world's largest trade fair for #train and transport #technology. The fair will be held from 20 to 23 September in Berlin. The 110-square-metre DLR stand (Hall 2.2, Number 405) will take visitors on a journey to the future of train travel thanks to interactive exhibits, scale models and other highlights.

Climate protection – DLR and CNES sign an agreement for the construction and operation of the MERLIN #environmental satellite

On 14 September 2016 in Berlin, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the French space agency (Centre national d'études spatiales; CNES) signed a cooperation agreement for the design, construction and operational phases of the Franco-German climate satellite MERLIN in the presence of Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and Federal Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy, as well as Thierry Mandon, French Minister of State for Higher Education and Research. The agreement was signed by Gerd Gruppe, DLR Executive Board Member responsible for the DLR Space Administration and Jean-Yves Le Gall, the President of CNES. The small satellite mission MERLIN – Methane Remote Sensing LIDAR Mission – will measure the concentration of methane in the Earth's atmosphere with unprecedented accuracy. The mission will last for three years.

HALO in the Caribbean – tropical cloud research

What effects do tropical #clouds have on our #climate? Do they warm up or cool down the atmosphere? What factors do they influence? Even the latest models do not fully understand the effects of these climate-influencing 'clouds'. Scientists from #DLR, together with partners from other research institutions, went to the #Caribbean to investigate these questions.

Hijacked ferries, searching for a man overboard and drifting popcorn

In the Situation Centre, an alarm flashes on the screen – a passenger ferry has changed its planned course for no apparent reason. The AIS signal eventually disappears from the display. By now, all ship-specific information must have been requested and compared in order to quickly clarify the situation and take immediate action.

Back in saturated air at sea level

The altitude sickness study conducted in the Valais Alps has delivered a sizeable yield: almost 1500 vials containing blood samples from the test subjects, frozen in dry ice at minus 80 degrees Celsius, were transported from the Margherita Hut at an altitude of 4554 metres back down to the #DLR Institute of #Aerospace #Medicine in Cologne.
