From #CometLanding to #GoodbyePhilae - tomorrow, the 27/07/2016, communication with the Philae comet lander will no longer be possible.
Join us and our partners in saying goodbye to #Philae
On 27 July 2016, the Electrical Support System (ESS) on Rosetta, which is used to communicate with Philae, will be switched off to save energy before September 30, the day the Rosetta mission will come to an end. We invite you all to help us and our partners say goodbye to Philae.

Half-time for MASCOT – half the journey is completed

On 3 December 2014, the ‪#‎DLR‬ +CNES MASCOT ‪#‎asteroid‬ lander was launched with its carrier probe +JAXA | 宇宙航空研究開発機構  ‪#‎Hayabusa2‬ from Tanegashima, an island about 40 kilometres south of the Japanese mainland. With ‪#‎MASCOT‬ halfway to its destination, we look back on all that has happened since the launch.

Fifteen years of disaster relief from #space – global patterns and trends

Today, the analysis and use of #satellite images is commonplace. Just 15 years ago, however, only a handful of specialists worked with these valuable data. Since then, a particular niche expertise has rapidly developed – the use of satellite data for #disastermanagement. An international team of experts led by #DLR has analysed the historical development of satellite-based emergency mapping. In the current special issue of +Science Magazine, the researchers are presenting global patterns alongside historic and emerging trends in this field.

BIROS to Earth - All systems up and running

It only took around 15 minutes for FireBIRD's satellite #BIROS to report back to us for the first time after the successful launch. All systems were put into operation as scheduled during the subsequent contacts with ground stations across the world: the satellite rotated to face the Sun and charge its batteries; on-board navigation by GPS was fired up; and the process of unfolding the solar panels, which had been tucked away safely during the launch procedure, went smoothly.

CAUTION, HOT: How a #rocket holds up in hypersonic flight - #DLR and +RWTH Aachen University launch joint #experiment from northern Sweden.

ROTEX-T successfully took off on 19 July 2016 at 06:05 CEST from the Esrange Space Center near Kiruna in northern Sweden. The payload reached an altitude of around 182 kilometres, returned to the ground after a flight of approximately seven minutes, and was recovered by a helicopter.

Health check for asteroid lander MASCOT

Space travel is no easy task – first comes the stressful launch with vibrations, then the long flight through the bitter cold and the vacuum. The #‎DLR‬ +CNES ‪#‎MASCOT lander has been travelling on board the +JAXA | 宇宙航空研究開発機構 #Hayabusa2 spacecraft for the last one-and-a-half years, and is currently at approximately 65 million kilometres from Earth. On 14 July 2016, the DLR engineers in the Lander Control Center (LCC) in Cologne switched the shoebox-sized lander and its four German and French-built instruments back on, and will spend the next few days finding answers to two questions: How is MASCOT's state of health? And how are the experiments on board?

Technologies for humanitarian assistance

‪#‎DLR‬ has been actively involved in humanitarian aid for many years. Alongside government partners, the private sector and scientific institutions, DLR is supporting the +United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) work towards a world with zero hunger. The WFP Innovation Accelerator launch event on 11 July 2016 featured top level discussions with prominent international figures to discuss the increasing importance of technology and innovation in the fight against hunger.

Traces of water in one of the biggest valleys on Mars

With a length of 600 kilometres and a depth of up to two kilometres, Mawrth Vallis is one of the biggest valleys on #Mars and a possible landing site for the +European Space Agency, ESA #ExoMars and +NASA Mars 2020 missions. It is entrenched in the Arabia Terra highland, which is more than four billion years old, and ends in the great Chryse Planitia lowland region.
