Art+Talk #16, interview with painter +Kurt Ankeny

+Lena Levin joined me as cohost, and we spent over an hour talking with Kurt about life, painting, materials, techniques and his philosophy as a painter, and person.

If you are into geeking out on how to make your own oil pigments, mixing techniques, and whatnot, I highly recommend listening to Kurt speak during this talk.

We also spoke of many other subjects, such as pursuning the artistic endeavor for its own sake, pursuing the creative process with time and years of dedication, finding your voice and staying true to it despite the regard of others. Later in the hangout we were joined by +Philip Hartigan , +Marie Hélène Visconti , +Susanne Ramharter , and +Abigail Markov , who brought new questions and perspectives into the conversation.

Thank you to each of you who joined, and to those watching and commenting on the outside. I'm so grateful that the Internet is a place where we can have these conversations about art. <3

+Philip Hartigan certainly ranks among my favorites, here on G+, and otherwise. He makes these beautiful stop motion animation stories. They're truly moving, deeply human, simple, and I cannot rave enough about them.

I had the pleasure of talking with Philip for an +Art+Talk hangout, about his work, a few weeks ago. It's here, if you'd like to hear more, from Philip, about his life as an artist, and his work. Art+Talk interview with Philip Hartigan

And, again, I will have the pleasure of hanging out with Philip this Sunday, when he joins me for a sit down with writer, curator, art critic and editor in chief of +Hyperallergic , +Hrag Vartanian for this week' s +Art+Talk . If you would like to watch, or possibly join, the event is here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/ch9o5ld2ef8tflvgtcdhs68inns

I feel so lucky, to be able to talk with and interview people that are so much smarter than me.

Art+Talk #18 will be a conversation with +Rob Michael. On the menu: How we, as creatives, measure success. (Or don't.)

About Rob:

Rob Michael is “That Jazz Guitar Guy on the Internet” (Google it!)

Along with being obsessed with music and the guitar since the age of 10, Rob attended a fancy music school (Musician’s Institute in Hollywood CA) where he met and played with most of my musical heroes. Turns-out, they’re normal folks just like the rest os us.

For the past couple of decades Rob have been “Living the Dream” of an active professional musician and has enjoyed a very successful private teaching practice in the San Francisco Bay area as well as online lessons.

Rob lead the Atmos Trio, an instrumental guitar trio which features myself, Joe Shotwell and Cliff Hugo. The trio gigs frequently in the SF bay area and hires themselves out as sidemen for recording and performance purposes.

Rob has also been enjoying playing solo and duo concerts from my studio to an appreciative internet audience via Ustream and Google+.

Rob does music and music technology related clinics. Also a fair amount of consulting with audio pros who find themselves cussing and fussing with their gear too much.

Apparently, Rob can string a sentence or two together as he occasionally does work as a freelance writer for Frets and Guitar Player Magazines.

+Art+Talk #17, an interview with +David Sandum, hosted by myself and +Max Rubenacker. Oh, and kids, I am really excited about this one.

About David:

David Sandum was born 1971 in Gothenburg Sweden. Today he resides in Moss Norway and has a studio at Gamle Pikeskolen (since 2003), where he also teaches several private students.

David is self-taught, though he studied art history at the University of Utah. He see's himself mainly as a colorist - and expressionist. Feelings, energy, and emotions are very much key to his work. The people he paints are never real portraits, "but inner portraits." Scandinavian influences are Munch, Karsten, and Sparre. Other influences are The German Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) movement (1911-1914) spearheaded by Kandinsky, and continental masters such as Gaugain, Van Gogh, Bonnard and Matisse.

A quote by Matisse sums it up well: "I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me."

How the Hangout works:
For the first 30 minutes of the hangout, it will be just David, Max, and I, and the hangout will be streamed from this page, as well as on hangoutnetworks.com. You're welcome to watch, and use the comments section underneath the hangout, which will be streamed here on the event, as a chat, for any questions that you may have for Hrag. I generally keep an eye on comments from viewers and try to bring their remarks into our conversation.

After 30 minutes, I will invite from those who have RSVPed YES  to the event (and whose profiles I have vetted, meaning I know you, or I can tell from your profile that you are an artist or art lover), into the actual Hangout, to join in on the conversation. RSVPing doesn't not mean you are required to come, but if you think you may want to, it is a way if insuring that you will receive an invite. It'll also guarantee that you get a reminder for the hangout, whether you should choose to watch or join.

Please be aware that the hangout is topical, and please join only if you are interested in being a part if the discussion at hand. :)

I also ask that you have a camera, headphones, and a mic if you would like to join.

**************************************************************************************
The hangout will also be recorded, so you are welcome to watch later, here, on YouTube, hangoutnetworks.com , or on the +Art+Talk   page.

Art+Talk #15, interview with writer, editor, curator, and art critic +Hrag Vartanian.

After postponing this talk, which had been set to take pplace last Sunday, but was derailed by #Sandy  , +Philip Hartigan and I spent well over an hour yesterday, grilling Hrag on anything and everything we could think of, and he kindly delivered.

Hrag is the editor in chief of the Brooklyn blogazine +Hyperallergic . We were able to hear his story, of how he wandered into, and then out of the art world, began blogging, and then slowly moved towards blogging about art, until finally founding a company that is now (IMHO) a beacon of lightheartness and approachability in the sometimes daunting world of art criticism and commentary.

We spoke about a number of things, from the devastation that the past weeks storm and destructionhas wrought upon New York, focusing a bit on the terrible losses suffered by local artists and galleries.

We discussed art criticism in a digital age, where often a magazine review can be replaced by an +Instagram post, and the non-linear apporach that we must take when doing so on the Internet. Sharing online evokes conversation, not monologues, and well, if you make it far enough into the hangout, you'll learned that sometimes a person may seem to be trolling, but he or she may simply be on their "Art Period". You heard it here first.

+Kurt Ankeny (who is incidentally tonight's guest) and +Peter Palmiotti swung by and joined us, and I do have to say that things got better, or funner, or worse, or something, from thereon.

I was in a bit of a silly mood yesterday, as usually happens, but I particularly blame Philip, for his "furry little animal" comment for my later reference to bodily fluids.

You  have been warned.
