A must read Op-Ed in the New York Times about the situation here in Tennessee. I am proud to say that I voted AGAINST both bills that are referenced.

From the Tennessee GOP on the Unite Against The War on Women Rally that I spoke at on Saturday.

“This is yet another political stunt by the Obama campaign and Democrat operatives. When an incumbent President does not have a record to run on, he has to create distractions, diversions and division – and that’s exactly what we see with their fictional ‘war on women'. Tennesseans are smart enough no...t to be fooled by the Obama cam...paign’s gimmicks. They want solutions to our economic problems, not political sideshows.”

It is telling that the Tennessee Republican Party cannot address the points that were made at the rally (the defunding of Planned Parenthood, anti-choice initiatives, anti-sex education bills) and instead talks about "distractions, diversions and division". When standing up for womens rights becomes a distraction, diversion, or division, something is wrong in this State.

Today in the Senate, I was able to pass two bills regarding sexual trafficking. One of them enhanced the penalty for when the victim was under age 13, and the other created an offense of trafficking for commercial sex acts. These two bills are VERY important, and I am quite pleased that they have passed the Senate.

I was pleased to offer up a Resolution today to honor Kenneth Douglas - a senior at Frayser High Schools - for his work in making others aware about youth violence!! Memphis should be proud to have such an outstanding young man working in our city, state, and country.

The sooner that children can start learning in school, the better off they are. This bill wastes precious months for those children who are cut-off from being able to go to kindergarten, and is one of the main reasons why I voted against this terrible piece of legislation.

Yesterday in the Senate, the drug-testing bill passed 24-9. Here is a local Nashville news segment on the bill. I was glad to be interviewed for the piece.

Today in Session, I debated Senator Campfield, who claimed that when Florida enacted a law that would mandate the drug testing of TANF recipients, it saved the state money. Sorry, but actual data from Florida disagrees with his analysis.
