I thought this one was posted, but things have changed here at G+ and I can't seem to find a lot of things ;).  It's all good, though.

This fine adult male pileated woodpecker came to feed at my tiny suet feeder, even though there was a large suet feeder with nuts and berries next to it.  I must have scared him off, but luckily I had the camera ready.  I have looked high and low since then and have found very few shots of this bird shot from the top.  Since I shot this, he is pretty much a regular at my feeders, preferring the smaller feeders to the large and just the other day he was comfortable enough to eat at the deck suet feeder while I sat (very still) at the table, not 3 feet away from him!  Incredible bird!

I have heard these in the forest behind my house.  Have never seen one and I have spent the majority of the summer at home birdwatching.  Today was different.  I heard them very close and used my iBird App on my phone to see if I could get them to come out of hiding.  They did just that!  After a few flights around the yard from tree to tree, this male landed on the fence, gave it a poke or two, looked back at me and went to rejoin his mate.  Now, to get the Great Blue Heron in the pond to do the same :))

Remember that cute little puppy I got at the end of last year?  Well, he's not so little anymore!  At 28" tall and nearly 80#, he is only showing one sign of slowing down.  He's only eating 3 times a day now instead of four :).   He is as even tempered as he is handsome!

It's been a long time once again since I have been here.  Hope y'all still remember me!  I am doing better and starting to shoot again, mostly back yard birding for now.  It's all good, though, because even backyard birding is better than not shooting at all.  One of my more recent shots of one of the littlest birds we have, save for the humming bird.  The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is also one of the most picked on - by the Black-Capped Chickadee of all things!  Maybe they are just a bit jealous of the beautiful coloring of their cousin?

The Best Laid Schemes of Mice and Men Often Go Awry

- Robert Burns  (English Translation)

I know I said I was back, but I found things went awry the day after I posted :0.  Pipes broke in the yard from the deep freeze, taking a week to find and fix, the flu passed through and now I am unfortunately fighting a battle with my vision.

Unable to keep my eyes open for any length of time is inconvenient at best.  Shooting is out and reading is now minimally done in order to save the good moments for necessary things.  I know it doesn't sound like fun, but it's just another hurdle for me and one that I will jump eventually.  For now, I wait for the right combo of meds from the modern medicine arsenal and hope they find something soon.

On the up side, my "little" rescue is growing like a weed!  He has doubled his weight and height, learned nearly a dozen commands and is the most energetic thing I have ever seen ;)!  The left is a shot of him at 10 weeks and the right 11 weeks (new collar at 11 weeks, the first one is already too small) .  His mask, markings and personality are all becoming more pronounced.  He is goofy, fun and smart.  However, at the rate he is growing, he may be the size of a small pony!

I hope to see you all again soon.  I also appreciate all of you who continue to check in and see if I am alive!  It really means a lot.  As soon as they can "fix me", I'll be back ;))

What Happened?

Wow, I have been gone so long and so much has changed!  Guess it's time to catch up ;).

The holidays were good, but empty of one great service dog in this world.  Lo and behold, about the same time Max passed, this little guy was born.  I rescued him, having been taken from his mom too early and have nearly gotten him back to full health.  He is crazy lively and will be big enough to carry my equipment in no time ;).  Meet Hunter, my new boxer/lab.

I look forward to catching up and seeing where everybody is again!

Feeding Frenzy

Last weekend I had a chance to visit the Nisqually Wildlife Refufe, where over 300 types of birds take refuge during their migration cycle.  It is where the freshwater of the Nisqually River meets the Puget Sound salt water.

This is where I finally made up my mind I am getting a long lens!!!!  I saw so many different birds, including a flock (?) of Great Blue Heron and did not have the reach to get to it with any clarity.  Now, which one??  ;))

A Room With a View

I surely wish it was my house that has this view, too!  This is a shot from earlier this year during one of my wandering days....  The stack of lenticulars on top of Mount Rainier and the smoke and fog in the valleys had me shooting it on the way to my destination and when I was on the way back.

For #mountainmonday , curated by +Michael Russell, because it's high time I get through some of my mountain backlog!  :))

Farewell My Friend, We Will Meet Again One Day

We found each other nearly a decade ago. You had suffered at the hands of someone who harbored ugliness in his heart and needed to heal.  To do that you needed to trust again.  Believe me, we were both in the same shape. We became inseparable, even getting waivers for you to be at work with me because you threw such tantrums when I left you alone :))

You helped me in ways I never could have imagined. You always thought it was a game, but later it would come in handy when I was in need.  So for every time I fell and you braced to help me up, everything I dropped and you picked up and brought to me, for every time you had to find the phone when I needed it - thank you.  When I didn't think I could get out of bed your happy face got me going, breathing over me like a little kid, ready to start the day - I will miss that.

We have had a wonderful life together. You, still trying to be that loyal friend when your own pain was so bad. There will be no more pain, no more suffering. It was and still is heartbreaking to have let you go, but even more so to watch you suffer. Goodbye my friend, I will meet you on the Rainbow Bridge one day. I hope you are at peace, Max.
