This Danvers, MA, complete backyard transformation consisted of renovating the homeowner’s existing store room and providing them access in order to "fully" use the backyard. We added a side deck and Belgard paver patio with solid granite steps into the room.

This project serves as the perfect example how the right outdoor living space can improve the way you view and use your entire home!

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/archadeck-suburban-boston-receives-Jim Finlay, owner of the Archadeck of Suburban Boston location in Boston, Massachusetts, and his team were awarded Archadeck Outdoor Living's Design Excellence award in the deck category. The winning project—sold and built under the direction of Larry Cohen—is a tall deck over a patio space, with walnut rails and black aluminum balusters. It features a white pergola with a retractable Shade Tree canopy, low-voltage lighting, and an under-deck drainage system.

Building a Deck on Grade
By Jim Finlay
Our customer’s requirements were simple: Build an interesting deck and patio off the back of the house. The deck would be low enough to make rails unnecessary. We recommended curves, and the customer liked our simple, elegant design.

Perhaps you are considering building a new deck. It will cost $15,000 or $25,000 or more (Read more about cost in Remodeling magazine’s Cost vs Value article), and you wonder about the longevity of such an investment. You’ve read that the decking companies warranty their new synthetic decking for 25 years or even for life. But will a deck really last that long?

Should a homeowner get his own building permit?
The short answer is “No”. The long answer is also “No”.
Really? Yeah, this one is straightforward.

“Honey,” JoAnn called to her husband, “George stopped by yesterday. He said our deck violates the building code.”

Silence.

“You know George, he’s one of the building inspectors in town. ”

“Uh-huh “

“He says our deck violates the building code.”

Silence.

“Fred, listen to me.”

“I am listening,” he replied – as he continued playing with the TV clicker.

“Well, he says our deck violates the building code.”

Silence.

“FRED!”

“Well, he should know. He’s one of the inspectors downtown.”

JoAnn glared at her husband. “I just said that.”

“Uh-huh.” Fred continued to scan the TV shows.

JoAnn walked to the TV, reached down, and unplugged it.

The screen turned black. “Whatta ya doin? I was watchin’ that!”deck_collapse

“Not anymore. Now you’re talking to me.”

“Ok, ok. So the deck violates the code. It hasn’t fallen down.”

Interesting. It has not fallen down.

Think about it: if your deck does not meet the building code, why has it not fallen down?

There are several reasons that a non-compliant deck might not collapse. Let’s take a look.

A front porch is your home’s face. It’s what everyone sees as they drive by. It greets your friends even before you do.
