TechTip: In the past when designing websites, it has been the practice to use images for certain text elements simply because the font used in the design wasn't a web friendly font.

This made things difficult from an SEO perspective, search engines can't read images, not yet anyway. The developer could only add both alt and title tags, ALL images should have these anyway, in a hope that the search engines would pick them up. The matter was further complicated in that  usually these images would be headings/sub-headings in the page, which should be H1, H2 or H3 tags.

Now things have moved on, modern browsers support the use of Web Fonts. This allows the design to be preserved, but more importantly, readable by both Search Engines and Screen Readers. With just a little extra effort by the developer, using CSS and Web Font's, the design can be read and enjoyed by all.

TechTip, Recently was asked by a client what the difference was between a responsive design and a fluid design.

In a responsive design there is a minimum width for each element that makes the layout of the page. If the browser window, viewport, is smaller than the total width of the various elements in any single  row on the page, they will 'fold' nicely under each other.

Now in a fluid design, each element may not have a minimum width and, again, If the browser window, viewport, is smaller than the width of the page the various elements will simply shrink, so whats wrong with that you ask? Well words will start to wrap and, if you go too far, will even split down to single letters which makes it hard for your users to read the content...

There are Fluid Responsive frameworks available now, giving you the best of both.

Eric Schmidt,Google exec, made six predictions for future technology on 24th April. One prediction was particularly bold 'Mobile will bring the world online before the end of the decade'.

Is this achievable, Judging by statistics I think we are more or less there already which raises the question are you? if so, is your presence working for you?

If you are in business, whether rural or otherwise, having an Internet presence is all important in reaching potential customers and promoting goods and services you may offer. However, simply having a Website alone wont necessarily succeed, the key here is keeping it fresh and up-to-date.

Friday 23rd March. Many businesses understand the need for having an internet presence, yet it is surprising to see so many traders in the ads in newspapers who do not. Why might this be? A fear of technology? A worry that an internet presence would be expensive? Or simply that they would prefer to work through the phone. The phone is of course still very important, and the great thing about mobiles is that they connect you to the person/customer rather than a physical building.

Yet what all businesses should consider, whatever their size, is how much more they can tell their potential customers about themselves and the services they offer. Forging a greater intimacy with a potential client is one good way to differentiate their offer from someone else's. Space is available for customer referrals, sample work, guide pricing, and most of all getting across the attitude of the vendor. "Friendly, prompt service" and so on.

If you want a Digital Brochure which gives your business such a presence you may be surprised by how affordable it is. Remember too, if you prompt this in a traditional newspaper advert, you can reduce the space of this, saving money, because you can say so much more on your portal.

Wednesday 20th March. Links remain a vital part of the SEO and SEM strategy for any business wanting to utilize the internet effectively, but are all links good for your site? The answer is no. In days gone by the volume of links was a deciding factor, now it is the quality of those links. And a new concept is developing where embedded back links may not always be necessary, instead co-referencing something from another site which is discussing something to your site, can be equally as important and where Google can pick up these "mentions" and intuitively make the connection. This is called co-citation.

Thursday 14th March. So, eBay has come out and said publicly that they don't believe Google AdWord works for them anymore. But is this really such a big deal? After all, if you were wanting to buy something from eBay the chances are you would just type that straight into your search engine. In my view eBay's take on this is not representative of what would be good for all businesses, but then Pay for Click does have some other pressures beyond eBay's decision. Why? Well, with such a quantum shift towards smartphones (as well as other portable devices) there simply isn't the room on screen for Google to render their paid results. So, whilst Pay for Click might still be a worthwhile tool in some sectors and situations, good search engine ranking positions (through Organic SEO) should remain a vital part of any online SEM (Search Engine Marketing) businesses activities.
