Totally get what you're saying that hair is "dead", and thus, can not be repaired, but I'm not getting the connect between that and protecting undamaged hair. There is, however, some evidence that coconut oil can help to prevent damage, which, in this case, is indeed protein loss: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12715094. No doubt this is where the internet rumors came from (the study is not new). Love to hear your thoughts given the info cited above :)
Hi there! You can apply substances to materials to strengthen their resistance to damage (for example, you can apply difference treatments to cotton to help it keep its feel and quality through washings), but this doesn't connect with whether the material is alive. It's more like helping to preserve the integrity of the material via applying external substances/treatments (sort of like sealing your wood deck). :)
