Three longtime employees are spending their retirement years a little differently. Tom Vinson, Rod Blocksome and Bryan McCoy are currently out in the central Pacific Ocean alongside other engineers and scientists searching for Amelia Earhart's L10E Electra that was lost in July 1937. Have you ever used the phrase, "I want the real McCoy?" It orginated from Elijah McCoy, an inventor, patent holder and son of escaped slaves who was sent to study mechanical engineering abroad. Since he was unable to find professional employment in his field, he took a job as a fireman on the Michigan Central Railroad. He invented a mechanism for automatically oiling working machinery, which found widespread use in industry and railroads. When others invented similar devices, purchasers came to demand "the real McCoy." #BlackHistoryMonth

Willa Brown was a pilot and president of the National Airmen’s Association of America. In 1939, she successfully lobbied for federal funds to support the National Airmen’s Association pilot training program. Located in Chicago, this was the first privately-run training school for black pilots in the country. #BlackHistoryMonth

Executive Order 9981, signed in July 1948, ensured equality of treatment and opportunity for all members of the military. The order was established by the Fahy Committee (President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment in the Armed Services) to carry out its provisions and helped open the door for the integration of blacks into all military roles. #BlackHistoryMonth #TBT

In 1921 Bessie Coleman became the first licensed black pilot in the United States. Known as Brave Bessie, she became a pioneer aviator at a time when flying was still risky. She received her training in France since American flight schools would not admit her. In 1926, at the age of 33, Bessie died as a passenger during a test flight for an air show. #BlackHistoryMonth #TBT
