I wanna go to Burning Mannext year :)

Photos from Burning Man, 2012.

Burning Man is a totally surreal experience. If the creative people and general oddity of the whole idea wasn't enough, this year nature herself participated by kicking up winds and sandstorms creating one amazing scene after another. I could spend days creating a set, props, and directing people and I'm sure I couldn't have come up with more perfectly orchestrated moments. Every 10 or 20 minutes or so, the wind would pick up and blow across the desert obscuring the horizon a nd wrapping the participants in this awesome haze, light and texture …

Burning Man is so many different things to so many different people, I thought it was better to share an album of my photos rather than a single shot. Unfortunately I think there are many negative associations about Burning Man. People focus on the elements that may seem most wild or titillating. If you get 60,000 people together, of course some of them are going to be doing things you may not agree with.

For me, Burning Man is a celebration of creativity. It's like a massive art gallery in the desert, where people themselves -- by the way they dress and behave -- become part of the creative scene. Unlike an art gallery in a typical urban space, no one is trying to sell you anything or get attention for their work. There is zero pretentiousness. These creations seem to come out of a sense of fun and play, and nothing else. The purity of spirit is what's so awesome. You see these things -- the art installations, art cars, and costumes -- that have taken people months and months to conceive, setup and build and realize it's only going to exist here for a week in the desert. Knowing that makes it all the more enjoyable. While shooting and working on these I kept feeling grateful to the artists and participants that made it possible for me to create these photos.

I'm sure my two cameras are going to die in the next few days (they're stuffed with the fine alkali sand), but I couldn't cover them up or try to protect them. I had them out in full force shooting while the sand was blowing into my face, lens and gear. In fact, I found myself walking out in the heat just waiting for the next big wind to create some magic.

Please share this if you like it, I hope lots of people can see this. :-)

PLEASE NOTE: To see the photos at full size, click on a photo, then click the space bar (the info on the right will disappear), then on a PC, click F11 (Function Key 11) to go to full screen mode. On a Mac, go to your browser window and click the double arrow tool to maximize the window to full screen (the double arrow is at the very top right of your browser window). Both Chrome and Safari will let it take over your full screen. Better yet, choose the "slideshow" option from Google+ (bottom left of the photo). I'd never even noticed this slideshow until I was putting this together. It's a nice experience to see the photos this way. Thanks Google+!

Please let me know if you have a favorite photo in the comments. Normally I like to share one photo I've put a lot of effort into, but I had trouble seeing the truly standout images in this bunch. I've never worked on so many photos at once... I usually only capture one or two I like each day! :-)

«De to trailerne er stort sett overlappende, men den amerikanske varianten har hakket mer driv i seg. Skyfall har norgespremiere 26. oktober, og på tross av at disse jevnt over spenstige trailerne i seg selv ikke lover det helt store, møter jeg filmen med store forhåpninger. For hvor morsomt hadde det ikke vært om Bond nok en gang meiet ned all annen actionfilm? Den som venter får se.»

Lars Ole Kristiansen skriver om den nye Bond-traileren på Montages.
