ICON HOSPITAL RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION
ICON was selected as best in class by the Institute of Diversity

HUMBLE, TX, April 15, 2015– ICON Hospital was selected as best in class for “Diversity Management and Strengthening the Workforce” by the Institute of Diversity in Health Management. The Institute for Diversity in Health Management commissioned the American Hospital Association (AHA) to conduct a national survey of hospitals to determine actions that hospitals are taking in these areas.

The Diversity Management and Strengthening the Workforce Recognition is based on hospitals’ reported efforts to improve diversity management through efforts to recruit, retain, and promote minority individuals within their workforce. ICON CEO Hilda Long was asked to serve as a “Best in Class” panel speaker at the Call to Action to Eliminate Health Care Disparities event.

“This recognition is a great honor. At ICON Hospital, we realize that our most important assets are our employees and we believe that the most important factor contributing to great patient outcomes is recruiting and retaining a competent and caring team of professionals,” says Hilda Long, Hospital CEO.

Respiratory Care
The Respiratory Care Program at ICON Hospital is designed to provide a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach for complete respiratory care to patients with pulmonary disorders. The Respiratory Program is directed by experienced and dedicated physicians. Our pulmonologists design a plan to meet each patient's individual needs. The physician component of the respiratory team includes Ear, Nose and Throat physicians that oversee airway management, and Internal Medicine Physicians that monitor the patient's complex medical needs.

One of our key focuses is the ventilator weaning program. We realize that no two patients are the same, so our ventilator weaning and management programs are patient specific. The Respiratory Program goal is to advance our patients to their optimal level of health and independence through proven clinical pathways.

Advantages to ICON's Respiratory Program

Pulmonary Care Plans are tailored to meet the needs of each individual patient, providing ventilator management and weaning.
The Patient Care Plan is updated weekly. Progress toward goals are discussed with the patient and/or the family after each Care Plan update.

Respiratory Therapists are on the unit 24/7 to assure the best possible pulmonary care.

The Respiratory Team works in conjunction with nursing and therapy services to provide a multidisciplinary approach. Patients are gotten out of bed as cleared by the physician.

Excellent patient/family education and training are provided to ensure they are part of the healthcare team and are able to participate in the process and progress.

ICON Hospital provides medical care services to the following areas Humble, Kingwood, Cleveland, Porter, New Caney, Splendora, Livingston, Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe, Crosby, Huffman, Dayton, Liberty, and Houston. We are available for any LTAC patients from other surrounding cities or states.

Helpful tips to stay safe as a patient:

As we strive everyday to stay prepared and concerned for patient safety, there are many ways that you the patient can be prepared and stay ahead of the game.  Here are the top ten suggestions from the CDC on how to be a safe patient when it comes to healthcare-associated infections (HAI).

Speak up.  Talk to your physician about any worries you may have and ask them what they are doing to help protect you.
Keep hands clean.  Remind your friends and loved ones to wash their hands every time they enter or leave your room.  Also, if you notice a healthcare worker in your room that failed to do so, ask them to.
Ask if you still need your catheter or central line.  When left in place too long, the chances of infection increase greatly.  Look for signs of redness, along with wet or dirty bandages.
Check with your healthcare worker beforehand to be sure any needles, syringes, or vials are new and not reused.
Inform your physician of any medications you are taking to avoid interactions and always check dosing before administered.
Take all of your antibiotics as prescribed and do not share with anyone.
Prepare for surgery by speaking with your physician on how you can prevent surgical infections.
Watch out for C-Diff (Clostridium difficile).  Let you doctor know if you have severe diarrhea, especially if you are also taking an antibiotic.
Know the signs and symptoms of infection.  It often comes with fever so let your doctor know when these symptoms arise.
Get your flu shot.  Protect yourself against the flu and other complications by getting vaccinated.

ICON Hospital kicked off the 2015 Rodeo Season with our annual chili cook-off.  With many returning contestants, including self proclaimed “Chili-Man”, Roy Zacharias, it was some tough judging for sure.  This year’s crown  went to newcomer, Miguel Alegria, who’s apparently a double agent working Rehabilitation Therapy during the day and Chili Master when the sun goes down!  We appreciate all of our contestants, judges, and free chili eaters!
