What Is An Alkaline Diet?

Its a good question, and the mainstream has little interest in the answer.

The simplest answer may be that an alkaline diet is just plain common sense. Its really all about balance.

There’s nothing extreme about it. There’s nothing you’re “not allowed” to have. Just eat and drink mostly what’s good for you, and only a little of what isn’t.

Technically, the definition of an alkaline diet is a diet consisting of 70% fresh, ripe fruits and vegetables including non-gluten grains like millet, quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth (alkaline forming foods). The other 30% can be meat, fish, dairy, processed foods, sweets, coffee, alcohol, etc. (acid forming foods).

What’s really interesting about this 70/30 ratio however, is that the normal ratio for most people in living in North America is the other way around. The typical North American diet is more like 30% alkalizing & 70% acidifying. Common sense is upside down.

Quick History Of Food

For millennia, people existed on diets based on minimally processed foods, of both animal and plant sources. But the rise of modern agriculture in the last few hundred years has had a massive effect on the way we eat.

In the old days, whole grains, dairy, meat, fruits and veggies were all there was. There was none of the processed and denatured food we have today. Even sugar was only for the elite in its earlier stages. But the industrial revolution has changed all that.

There are refined grains, refined sugar, and lots of salt in most processed foods, not to mention all kinds of artificial additives. Combined with the discovery that animals fatten quickly when fed on grain instead of grass, the result is that too much meat and processed food is being eaten together, with not enough fresh fruits and veggies.

These changes are recent in human history, and they have led to the alkaline acid ratio of the average North American to be more like 10/90. People just don’t realize what eating all that that processed and refined food does in their bodies.

Fresh Fruit Is Alkaline Food

Let’s look at fruit for a moment. Fresh fruit means not dried or frozen, and certainly not cooked. Apples, oranges, mangos, avocados, persimmons, plums, pears, bananas, lemons and limes are just a few examples of readily available fresh fruits which all have an alkalizing affect on your body chemistry. These foods are delicious and life giving, but preparing them is also a little more difficult than ripping open a bag of Cheezies.

Veggies Are Alkaline Foods

How many people eat a salad every day? Many people never eat salad at all. Romaine and green leaf lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, carrots, beets, celery, cucumbers, cabbage and kale mixed together in a big bowl with some olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing. Yum! Some variation of a salad like this can and should be eaten at least once a day, and ideally 2-3 times. Raw juicing of these beautiful foods is incredibly valuable from a alkaline health perspective. The non-gluten grains like millet, quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth are nutritious and very beneficial.

It definitely takes more work to prepare a beautiful salad and cook some whole grains, than to open a box of cookies and a can of pop, but which one is the sensible choice? Laziness is epidemic in our society of convenience. And there is always a real price to be paid if we get lazy.

So, what happens when we consume mostly acid forming foods and drinks for decades on end? Is there a price to be paid for this? The answer is yes, there is, for sure.

Your Blood pH Is Slightly Alkaline

You see, our blood happens to be slightly alkaline (pH 7.35-7.45), and your body cannot allow this range to be exceeded. You have built into your body a powerful mechanism to protect this delicate pH range. The way your body keeps the pH just right is by buffering.

When you eat alkaline foods, your body extracts the nutrients from what you eat. Your body then stores whatever it doesn’t need at the moment. In this way you can build up reserves of minerals, vitamins and energy for use later. Its like a bank account where you make more deposits than withdrawals, and the goodness builds up.

Mineral Deficiency From Too Much Acidity

When your body fluids become acidic, your body uses up minerals from your blood and tissue reserves (scalp, skin, hair, teeth, bones etc.) to buffer, or neutralize) the acids. These acids and toxins form as a result of an acidic lifestyle (eating too much meat and processed food, drinking too much coffee, alcohol, smoking, prescription drugs, not enough exercise, etc).

These acids in your body must be neutralized! Your system will do whatever it takes to keep your blood pH within the narrow range of 7.35-7.45. If your body failed to maintain this state (aka. Homeostasis), then death would quickly follow.

If more minerals are consumed in the buffering process that are added, then its easy to understand that a mineral deficiency will occur. Mineral deficiency leads to cell damage, which is at the heart of most symptoms of illness and disease.

Arthritis, failing eyesight, hair loss in men, obesity, cellulite in women , gout, rheumatism, tooth decay, skin problems and the list goes on. Mineral deficiency is the natural result of the acidic North American lifestyle, and this can only lead to all kinds of health problems as the decades pass.

Acid Alkaline Balance

This is why the Alkaline Diet makes so much sense. Its a very simple concept that appeals to our common sense. And its easy to follow. What seems not so easy for people is to make the initial change.

Plant nutrients and a balanced acid alkaline balance are crucial for your success

For athletes, both training and the required training success depend largely on a proper diet. Many athletes rapidly increase their intake of simple, "empty" carbohydrates for fast energy consumption and hope for fast muscle growth by protein. The body needs herbal nutrients for the metabolic process to function at its best. These vitamins and bioactive substances, minerals and trace elements determine the metabolic performance and the reaction rate e.g.of protein into muscle mass and tight tissues.

Better workout - alkaline

What could be better than a morning full of sunshine? We open our body to fresh air and life energy. We find delight in the intoxicating fragrance of fresh herbal teas or coffees. The process of digestion starts already: our body produces digestive secrets in mouth and stomach in preparation to make use of the breakfast for the complete organism.
