Apple and Sonos have always made perfect sense. Why its time for Apple to make the move: http://nextmarket.co/blogs/smarthomeweekly/132921031-why-its-time-for-apple-to-buy-sonos
Before I read the news of the Sonos layoffs today, I was wondering this week about why Apple never had swooped in and bought the company, something I had long thought might someday happen. Think about this: What if instead of buying a headset and a music streaming company in Beats - both things where there isn't a whole lot of core technology innovation and something I think Apple could have gotten for a lot less for $3 billion - what if they had...

That may be true, but I think Apple could overpay and convince. Plus Sonos doesn't innovate super quickly (their original innovation was pretty great), and they're going to have trouble keeping up with Amazon.

The early consensus coming out of CES is that Amazon Alexa was the star of the show. Not only did the virtual assistant technology and its physical manifestation in Echo dislodge Nest as the sexy integration partner that everyone clamors to put in their press release and on their consumer packaging, but you could sense a palpable excitement on the show floor about the potential of the voice-powered virtual assistant. And while some blogs seemed ...

Download RSS iTunes Episode #1 (after the debut/intro show, show #0) of the Smart Kitchen Show. In this episode, Mike explores how he can learn to be a better cook, and tries to figure out if he should use his mom's old Betty Crocker cookbook, iPad apps, YouTube or...a robot. You can find the Smart Kitchen Show at www.smartkitchensummit.com/show or on iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/smart…how/id1037600142

Home Automation  -

Google just introduced a new Wi-Fi router with Zigbee/Thread and Blueooth. It's essentially a smart home hub in a Wi-Fi router package. I think they're trying to hasten the demise of the stand alone hub. Whether they'll succeed is yet to be seen. You think they'll have any luck?
Another week, another Google bombshell. Yep, today Google announced it had introduced a new Wi-Fi router called OnHub, a Wi-Fi router/smart home hub that they think will make Wi-Fi simpler and easier. There's no doubt this is something that we could all use. In fact, I think nearly a decade and ...

Do you know the difference between Icontrol and Zonoff? Thread and Zigbee? Then take our survey on the #smarthome!
We want to hear from people who know about the ins and outs of the smart home and IoT marketplace. We are conducting a survey and will share a summary of the results with those who take the survey. We'll also be giving out some smart home gear to a few lucky folks who take the survey.

We went to the #housewares show in Chicago and think we're seeing the creation of a new cooking device/system category: http://www.smartkitchensummit.com/smartkitchenblog/2016/3/10/intelligent-cooking-systems-emerge-as-major-new-trend-at-housewares-show #smartkitchen #foodtech #iot
I went to the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago this past week to see what trends are emerging in the food tech and connected kitchen spaces. The Housewares show is the leading trade industry event for the cookware and small home appliance markets, so I figured I could get a good snapshot of what is coming over the next 12-18 months in these categories as well as what may be on the longer term time horizon. Not surpri...

Apparently Amazon's not done trying to get all up into our grill(s). #smartkitchen   #smarthome  #iot
Like many, I read about a rumored "kitchen computer" from Amazon for the first time in a Wall Street Journal piece published yesterday. The details are sparse, with only one long sentence describing the project in the piece: "Still in the works is a high-end computer for the kitchen—code-named Kabinet—designed to serve as a hub for an Internet-connected home and capable of taking voice commands for tasks like ordering merch...

Google announced its OnHub Wi-Fi router, which also has  Zigbee/Thread and Bluetooth radios. In my opinion, it's a trojan horse and is their effort to subsume the smart home hub. Thoughts?

Not into the IoT yet. Still to new for me and waiting for the dust to settle. The hacking of my home still scares me.
