There were some great conditions for landscape photography in Devon towards the end of last week. After a couple of sunsets and a sunrise I was so exhausted that a Sunday sunrise shoot was completely out of the question. That was until our youngest woke us up at 4am! I looked out the window and saw a low gap of clear sky to the east, so dashed up the road to Belstone and stumbled up to one of my favourite viewpoints. The light didn't last more than 2 minutes, but it was definitely worth it.

This ancient 15th Century chapel, perched high on the rocks in Cornwall has fascinated me for years. As a kid visiting Cornwall every summer I used to love hearing tales of local myths and legends, and found this place very evocative of Cornish folklore. I never actually visited the location back then and relied on gazing at pictures of the chapel in books.

Over the last few years I have visited several times with my camera. Its really not an easy place to shoot, and quite awkward to move around with a camera and tripod. But I was quite pleased with this effort from a recent trip.

I recently returned from leading a photography workshop in Yosemite Valley with Tatra Photography.  We run workshops in Yosemite each autumn, but this was to be our first Spring trip.  Boy, were we in for a treat!

Yosemite is marvellous in the Spring!  Although the waterfalls weren't thundering as much as in a typical Spring, they are still mightily impressive.  And on top of the waterfalls, there is mist, clouds which make for wonderful atmospheric conditions...and great sunsets!

We had extremely challenging conditions on the Faroe Islands last week, including gale force winds and loads of rain. This morning was the only proper sunrise we saw, and we were lucky to capture it at all. We headed to our planned sunrise location, but the wind was simply too strong to consider taking any photos and the visibility was almost zero thanks to low cloud. Rather than heading back to the hotel, I decided instead to try out a new location on the opposite coast which I hoped would be sheltered from the wind.

I have never taken a workshop group to a location that I haven't previously visited, but faced with the prospect of an early return to the hotel I decided it was worth the risk. And it paid off, handsomely. Not only were we completely sheltered from the strong winds but, a quick recce of the shoreline revealed some beautiful rock pools to reflect the dawn sky.

I am away in the Faroe Islands at the moment leading a photographic workshop for Tatra Photography.  So far we have endured blizzards, strong winds and rain, but despite that the scenery is breathtaking.

I'm really excited to announce that, together with Ross Hoddinott and Mark Bauer I will be leading a Tatra Photography tour to Myanmar in November next year.

Anybody who knows me knows that I prefer the colder climates, but for such such a beautiful location I'm prepared to make an exception!
If you are interested in joining us for this trip, please check out the details on the link below. Just look at the boat we will be staying on, I think you'll be impressed!

Seven years ago on 27th February I left my day job in Southampton, and relocated to Devon to start my new life as a professional landscape photographer and country bumpkin. For somebody who doesn’t enjoy stepping out of his comfort zone, I can remember the uncertainty I felt at both leaving a good job and moving home at the same time. Fortunately, things couldn’t have turned out better; I love living in Devon with my wonderful family and my photography has gone from strength to strength.

But now its time for another change. Today, exactly 7 years to the day we are hoping to exchange contracts to purchase our new house. We will be so sad to be leaving lovely Morchard Bishop, but are very excited to be moving to Dartmoor. Well almost! To be precise our new house will be 325 metres from the edge of the National Park, so really there can no longer be any excuse for missing sunrise on the moor!

Here is a very old picture of the beautiful rolling countryside of mid-Devon just outside Morchard Bishop.

I've just updated my website with an article about my experiences in the Faroe Islands. This article was originally published in my regular column in last May's issue of the excellent Landscape Photography Magazine.

For those of you joining me and Tatra Photography for the Faroe Islands workshop in April, don't worry. I have no desire to lead the group down those steps!

Together with Ross Hoddinott I ran a workshop in Cornwall last week on behalf of Nikon School.  We had a really lovely group of people and enjoyed visiting some fantastic locations.  I only got one brief chance to get my camera out, luckily it was a moment of beautiful light at the ever dramatic Land's End.
