@tattedrunnergirl Boston Marathon experience of triumph over knee surgery in just 110 days. #cocogogirl

“I tore my ACL in my right knee 16 years ago. In August, the pain started to have a negative impact on my running. I noticed my pace becoming progressively slower, my mileage was dropping, and I was having so much pain in my knee. So, on November 23rd, I had another surgery. A few weeks later, the incision became infected and I ended up having to have surgery again on December 30th to clean out the infection. Then my incision ripped through the sutures and was on bed rest for 5 weeks. Finally, on January 26th, I was cleared to run. My first run was barely 2 miles and I had to stop so many times. I knew I was in for a very rough 12 weeks of training. I would mainly run in the morning after working midnight shifts, and to say it was “hard” is a complete understatement. After being on my feet for 12 hours all night, the last thing I would want to do is run. When I finally got to Boston, and I lined up in my corral, I knew that I had done everything I could to at least finish the race. The elements were not in my favor on race day so I just did the best that I could and I enjoyed every second of that day. I stopped to hug people on the side of the road, I slapped a million hands, I blew kisses to the Wellesley girls, and I thrived on millions of strangers screaming “Go Brenda!!” thanks to it being written down my arm in marker. The last 6 miles I was choking back tears, and when I made that final turn onto Boylston Street I couldn’t hold them back any longer. I crossed that finish line crying happy tears while feeling every emotion possible. I was exhausted, and everything hurt, but I did it. I was a Boston Marathon Finisher. My time didn’t matter. Four months prior to me crossing that finish line, I was on complete bed rest, and 2 months prior, I could barely run 2 miles. I do not feel the need to “explain” my time to anyone. All that matters is the pride that I feel knowing everything that I overcame in order to achieve my goal.”

@run_far (Boston Marathon and Cocogo Ambassador). I love the Boston marathon. Everything about this marathon is exciting. Having to qualify to get in. Touring the city with your family. The expo is like a regular expo... on steroids. There is so much excitement, and anxiety in the air. It's all so contagious. Last time I ran Boston was in 2008, with a little stomach bug that left me nearly passed out and puking. I was praying for a better experience.

I used my qualifying time of 3:19, from the St George marathon in 2013. Since then I've focused more on Ultra running. 100 milers to be exact. I've run 3 in the last year. I've lost a lot of speed because my focus has been on distance over speed.

I went into Boston having no idea how I would do. The weather was going to be awful. Cold, rain, and a crazy nasty head wind. I was a bit nervous because of the wind. But I enjoyed every mile. I slapped as many little hands as possible, smiled and said Hi to spectators on the side lines and thanked as many volunteers as possible. I had a couple dark miles through the hills, but quickly began to smile again when I remembered where I was and how great this marathon is. I ended up missing another qualifying time by 2:38... I needed 3:40:00 or faster. I'm pleasantly surprised with my time (3:42:38)

If you have a goal of qualifying for this amazingly-awesome marathon... Believe you can do it. Know you have it in you. We can do hard things. Bring on Boston 2016.
