What should we make of the fact that, according to this BusinessWeek survey, MBA recruiters in Technology eschew "entrepreneurship" as a job candidate trait, Consulting recruiters disdain "global mindset", and Financial Services recruiters, while undervaluing entrepreneurship and global mindset in relatively equal measure, value "communication skills" the most (far and above "quantitative skills")? http://bloom.bg/1Fu9ECz

In our experience, the "tiny fraction" referenced in this timely WSJ article falls somewhere between 15% and 20% (if one is looking at student matriculating to one of the 'top 10' MBA programs in the U.S.). That would represent roughly 140 students (and pre-MBA internships) for an incoming HBS class alone; extrapolating that figure to a wider set of schools suggest that this may be a significant trend, not a niche phenomenon.

In addition, to focus on one of the opinions shared in the article, gaining pre-MBA internship experience can only serve to "narrow [one's] horizons" if the admitted MBA candidate is forced to accept a subsequent internship or full-time offer, and/or is in some way precluded from participating in on- and off-campus recruiting during business school itself.

The counter-intuitive fear that undertaking a new / challenging / rewarding pre-MBA professional experience (whether paid or not) might somehow narrow, rather than expand, an incoming MBA's horizons is merely a fear of the unknown, and a symptom of the largely informal landscape that currently characterizes pre-MBA internships and programs of all kinds.

@WSJ:"A tiny fraction of admits try pre-M.B.A. internships, according to surveys conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council, but school officials and admission consultants say the share is growing. It’s just the latest way that M.B.A. recruiting is shifting earlier. That worries b-school career officers, who say students may be narrowing their horizons before school begins." - http://on.wsj.com/1yO8Wrh
