Reposting for the non-evening crowd. And I forgot to say you can feel free to share this far and wide.

New Dream & Shadow sample

Preview sample for October's third song can be downloaded here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9k6jY73glEKUVhZN1pjM0RDYlE/edit?usp=docslist_api

It's untitled so far ("ballade" is a description, not a title), and I haven't decided whether I'll put words to it or not.

S/Lay soundtrack final reminder

The songs drop tonight, folks, so pledge now (or at least before you go to bed) if you want to get 'em!

To those who aren't up on the Patreon:

All the cool kids already know about it.

I kid, I kid! But seriously, it's an awesome crowdfunding system based on passion and good will. You pledge $X per content release, and set a maximum total monthly pledge. At the beginning of every month, you get billed for each release of the prior month since you pledged. You can alter your pledge and/or monthly limit at any time, including just before the end of the month, just in case something comes up (or the creator you're supporting unexpectedly releases like fifty things).

To the wonderful folks who have already pledged: I've already started working on songs to release in October. I will be posting samples of them before they drop so you can gauge whether or not you want to keep pledging after you've got the S/Lay thing. (Also nothing's to stop you from holding on until they drop, deciding it's not your thing, and pulling out before you get billed).

Also +clash bowley , +Mark Delsing , +Tim Koppang -- I need your Google account email so that I can give you the stuff. PM me, or email me at marksman45@gmail

Hi all, new public preview downloads for the Patreon campaign. The full versions (which are actually better, because I take the previews from the first crack at the mix, which I tweak for a while before releasing the song) are dropping on the Patreon in a few minutes -- I had these previews ready to go days ago, but couldn't get internetized. So now it's all happening at once.

Re-posting as public, and also because I suspect that a lot of people who have shown interest didn't see the first post*

Regarding the S/Lay w/Me soundtrack
Okay, folks, so the S/Lay Kickstarter didn't fund, which gives me sads, but such is the nature of Kickstarter.

I know a bunch of you wanted the soundtrack. Since the KS didn't pan out, here's the plan:

You go here: http://www.patreon.com/dreamandshadow
You click "Become a patron" and pledge at least one dollar per song (there's five songs in the soundtrack)

Friday, in the middle of the night, I will drop links to download the songs, and everyone who has pledged will be billed per song. Patreon allows you to withdraw or adjust your pledge at any time (you can also set a monthly limit for how much you can be billed, but I do request that you don't set a limit lower than $5 for this purpose; if you stick around, you can always change it later), so if you're only interested in the soundtrack, you can just pay for the soundtrack. Of course I'd like you to come for the soundtrack and stay for the other stuff, but that's your call.

If you pledge, I will also need your Google account email address in order to grant you access to the downloads. I won't actually send any email to it, but Google might send a notification there when the downloads are authorized.

*I suspect this because I have a list of names, and bunches of those names didn't interact with the prior post. I haven't yet decided which is less obnoxious: to keep reposting to maximize the chances of them seeing this, or to plus them all in so that I know for sure they didn't miss it, and that if they don't opt in it's on purpose.

Yes, this. Also I have things to say about how doing the soundtrack pushed me to develop my art (especially regarding electric bass -- I gained at least two levels in bass -- and recording techniques), but my thoughts on that aren't very organized yet.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/847190685/s-lay-w-me-play-app-revolution

So, let's talk about this kickstart. Maybe it seems too niche-y ... why an app?

Because on-line play really could be pretty amazing, if and only if the primary act of role-playing were given priority. That primary act being: you and me, listening to one another and imagining stuff inspired by what we hear.

For example, people ask me, if you want to play Step On Up, why not play chess or poker? Why fuck around with imagining dragons and pretending "what I said my guy did" matters? The answer is that the latter isn't a pretense. You said X is "happening," and I say "I do Y in the midst of X," and back and forth (or among us in group play). We can do a lot with that interchange, which chess and poker can't, but more importantly, we are connecting as people. We "get" one another while we do this thing. When that doesn't happen during a role-playing session, it has a forced and weird and falling-apart quality which at most can be filled in with "us geeks hanging out." When it does, what Roger called "superfunctional play" and which I call "functional" or more simply, "fun," then role-playing becomes a genuinely new medium. (For? Well, that's Creative Agenda, and blah blah blah.)

OK! So how can on-line play keep this quality front and center, and not divert it? So - no text boxes to type stuff into, no board to look at away from the other person, and no mechanics conducted on the desk. It means looking at one another and using the system right there with the other person, both of us able to see the parts appropriate for that particular game's rules, and play looking and in fact being nothing more than playing together. The "board," or game interface, is if you will vertical, two-sided, on the screen with our faces. The nature of the interface is to conduct the mechanics when prompted, and to help organized "where we are" in any particular mechanics-routine.

It works. As currently bare-bones, it's all stark and texty-looking, but people, it does what I have not found any on-line play mechanism to do. The ones I've seen all pull us apart, creating a table that we're shifting to and playing with instead of each other, or any number of other muffling features. S/Lay w/Me happens to be the best of my games for pilot work on making this idea fly - and I really want it to, past my own use of it. I want to see other people take the idea and do new things with it, like make it suitable for more-than-two play somehow, or even design game mechanics that couldn't be done on a table in the first place. That's why I'm making it free once fully designed, too.

So I don't see it as niche. I see it as a door. Can you help me with that? Or provide help at this late (and dark!) hour for getting that word out?
