The snail mail postcard is back!

The cool vintage postcard is booming after being beaten by e-mail services severely for the last decade. Several initiatives are taken around the globe, to promote the pleasure of receiving something in your mailbox, that is nor an invoice or advertising; just a post card for you!

A website and movement called Postcrossing.com shows how “the slow movement” is good for your personal ego and towards your fellow human beings. The goal of this project is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world. The main idea is that: if you send a postcard, you will receive one back from somewhere in the world.

You can produce instant postcards and send them via your iPhone or Android device. Your personal postcard will then be printed and posted. Try out Appel's Cards otherwise the less expensive Postagram or Touchnote.

Everything will be connected; even things not generally associated with smartphones, like the home thermostat, locks to your house. Event to keep your home plants watered, using a sensor which transmits information on temperature, light and humidity and alerts you when your plants are thirsty.

Smartphones are still connected to the cloud in terms of accessing data and transmitting information, but it seems to me that the smartphone in many ways is becoming the “remote control” of our digital lifestyle.

While making the sensor talking to the smartphones, who talks to the cloud via internet, in this scenario the smartphones are really emerging as the hub of our digital lifestyles.

A good example of this is the role of my smartphone in my car. My smartphone uses bluetooth to connect to my car’s digital display, sound system... which has channels for music, data and voice. When a call comes in to me, the phone serves as the hub that connects to my car’s screen, mic, speakers and tells me who is calling, and even allows me to use the controls on the car's steering wheel‎ to answer the call. And the rest of the time I listen to music via bluetooth on my smartphone connected to Spotify and all this since some years.

And if you are diabetic, one health product that is really interesting is iHealth’s wireless blood glucose meter.

Or an HD version of WiFi camera at home or in your office, a device with 720p video and digital audio capture for monitoring on-the-go and easy setup with your smartphone and all this for $150.

Whirlpool showed at the Las Vegas tech gathering this year its line-up of smart appliances which can send a user a text message when the laundry is done, and more.

I believe we will see over the next two years, thousands of sensor-based products tied to apps on our smartphones. The health-, kitchen-, TV- and car- segment is the beginning of our connected digital lifestyles.

The smartphone is the hub of your digital lifestyle.

don’t throw anything away; there is no “away”

Perhaps we should add William McDonough and Michael Braungart’s book to all schools and as well as for all government employees, as a start.

Cradle-to-cradle is a manifesto calling for the transformation of human industry through ecologically intelligent design.

why do the good things always end?

Because if they don't end, you will be caught up in the moment and won’t see the other good things ahead. So please give me a new bottle but from 1966, since someone told me “Life achievement it’s when your wife is younger than the booze you’re drinking”.

Open letter to Mark Zuckerberg

Did you know that social media accounts for 18% of the time you spend online. 6,7 hours is on Facebook per month on average. If you take ONE hour of your online time per month and donate your corresponding revenue by working that hour instead of FB surfing, you can put an end to "extreme poverty".

Let’s take the average American income: $ 28.95 / hr. times by 1 hour, times 168,642,820 Facebook users in the United States. Well the work and surf American population could donate $ 4,882,209,639 per month :)

I guess the rest of the world’s Facebook users can donate one hour of their surfing too? Here are the juicy numbers: assume that a quarter of the western world FB surfers do the “Facebook 1hr. donation”. Meaning the working U.S., Europe and Asia FB surfers, we have 4.3 billion dollars ($4,350,859,746) donated to the fight against poverty each month!

The World Bank definition of extreme poverty is: the population living on less than $1.25 a day. Approximately 1 billion people still live in extreme poverty. So we need 37.5 billion U.S. dollars per month! Look, we can help 11.5% of the population living in extreme poverty with the “Facebook 1h donation”...
But if you donate an hour of your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pin It time; we reach 35% of the population living in extreme poverty.

Mr. Zuckerberg, please build a plugin now that allows us to donate 1 hr. or more of our Facebook Time to i.e. The World Bank.

Could work like this: corresponding 1hr. revenue transferred and settled by each ones local tax account directly to the World Bank. The “Facebook 1hr. donation” project could have its own Facebook page showing how the World Bank spends every dollar, online. Each donor would have a "Red Poverty Pin" attached to their Facebook page showing their monthly participation.

Social Consciousness would be Social Media involved in the reduction of poverty and consequently the world's population as well as global warming.

So how proud would you be when you meet Bono and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim within 5 years? Knowing that social media and Facebook put an end to extreme poverty…

This could work for Larry Page and Sergey Brin also.

Regards
Richard

PS Everybody, please help me to spread this letter, so we can reach the decision makers. It is your first step in this project:)
