There you have it folks - straight from the longitudinal maestro's mouth:

The seventy-five years and twenty million dollars expended on the Grant Study points … to a straightforward five-word conclusion: ‘Happiness is love. Full stop.’

Very brief article that nonetheless manages to make some key points about the fallacy in using Europe as an example to be avoided - as well as the more basic fallacy of there being one composite/amalgamated  "Europe".

I still think one of the biggest issues facing the United States today is a failed media - all other issues are partially contingent upon facts and fact-checking - something the media has failed to do. I can't speak to the past, as I wasn't around 50 years ago, but it certainly seems like politicians can make some really baseless claims without any serious challenge from "the media" (that other chimeric composite).

The lede says it all:

Romney’s offerings are more like simulacra of policy proposals. They look, from far away, like policy proposals. They exist on his Web site, under the heading of “Issues,” with subheads like “Tax” and “Health care.” But read closely, they are not policy proposals. They do not include the details necessary to judge Romney’s policy ideas. In many cases, they don’t contain any details at all.

~~~
I really wish there was a serious challenge to Obama, that could actually polarize the candidates in the traditional sense of right vs. left and not the current left = just left enough of middle and right = pandering to the fundamentalists/Tea Party.
I'd love to have to seriously pick between two serious candidates, who have serious debates about serious issues, that get aired on TV, and that people actually watch it.
Treat children with care. Adults, too.
Such concerns are not too surprising in thoughtful adults who are going through mid-life crises. However, it is a matter of great concern when these existential questions are foremost in the mind of a twelve or fifteen year old. Such existential depressions deserve careful attention, since they can be precursors to suicide.
This was a great review of a book I have little interest to read. If anything, I'd probably read Secretary. The review goes beyond the book though... I hadn't heard of LRB before, and perused some more of their staff's writings - good stuff, all.
Oligarchy much? Why are they called "dark money"? Because they don't have to disclose their backers, because (wait for it) they're non-profit.
This is awesome, if only for the fact that the Pareene's commentary about GG&S is pretty accurate - it's dense, and reading it quickly is impossible. I'm still reading it and I started it a long time ago.
In other news, Romney is rapidly becoming a joke. I wish he brought his savvy business acumen to the table so we'd at least have two serious candidates and not just the incumbent. Sigh.
