How well do traditional Java frameworks such as DropWizard or Spring Boot compare to JVM alternatives such as Clojure on Ring or Scala on Finatra? I thought that I would share the results of what I discovered when I wrote a rudimentary news feed micro-service in DropWizard and compared load tests on it with those on a feature identical micro-service written in Clojure.

Is there any performance penalty to running micro-services in Docker? That was what I wanted to find out when I put a news feed service under load on AWS. I ran repeated load tests of the service running either in or out of Docker then I collected and analyzed the results.

If you are writing micro-services in Scala and want to know which SQL database is faster, MySql or PostGreSql, then check out this blog where the Scala news feed service is put under load on AWS multiple times. Test runs use either MySql or PostGreSql. The performance data is then collected and analyzed. You may be surprised to learn who the winner is.

I recently stood two micro-services up in AWS. They were identical in function but one was written in Scala and the other in Clojure. I compared how they performed under load. The Clojure version had three times more throughput than the Scala version.

Is Scala's cake pattern of merit when writing heterogeneous data source micro  services?
