Timorese Olympic Skier Announced As New  Brand Ambassador For Pepsi

Timorese Olympic skier Yohan Goutt Goncalves was given a hero’s welcome in Dili and a commendation from the Prime Minister following his success at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.  At an event sponsored by Burger King and Pepsi, Yohan had a meet ‘n’ greet with his fans, signed autographs and posed for photos with more than 100 people.

Yohan was born in France to a Timorese mother and a French father.  He started ski-ing as a child and his biggest ambition was to put Timor-Leste on the map by representing the country at the Olympics.  Not only did he achieve this, he also acquitted himself superbly by coming 43rd out of 117 competitors in his event.

In her remarks to the crowd, Burger King/Pepsi Representative Zeenat Awan Aluwihare said that Yohan’s is success was all the more remarkable because he went to Sochi to compete at world level without the financial and institutional support that is available to Olympians from most countries.

“So it is with great pleasure that I can announce today that East Timor Trading, the distributors of Pepsi in Timor Leste, will be sponsoring Yohan toward his skiing aspirations and that he is the Timor Leste Brand Ambassador for Pepsi. It is very exciting that we will be seeing much more of him in the coming months.  Pepsi is one of the world's most iconic and recognized consumer brands globally. Today, the Pepsi family includes Pepsi, Pepsi Max, Pepsi Light, Miranda, 7 Up, Mug and Mountain Dew and Yohan will join the ranks of people like Kanye West, Kylie Minogue and Beyonce to represent this iconic brand,” she said, adding “All of us at East Timor Trading and Timor-Leste as a whole are rightly proud of Yohan and we are delighted to be able to play a role in helping him in the pursuit of sporting excellence”.

Thanking his new sponsors and fans for their support, Yohan said, “I am filled with honour that I could raise the Timor-Leste flag to the show the world. I realised something: if you have a dream, grab on to it and follow it to the end”.

First BURGER KING® Restaurant Opens in Timor-Leste
Dili-based hospitality entrepreneur Sakib Awan held a celebration for the grand opening of Timor-Leste’s flagship  Burger King restaurant at Timor Plaza last month. Elias Diaz Sese, President of Burger King Asia Pacific at Burger King Holdings Inc. flew in to attend the event.
"We are very excited to bring the Burger King brand and the world-famous Whopper® sandwich to Timor-Leste”, Sese said in his remarks to guests, “We have the right partner in Sakib Awan to drive our business and bring our world-class food to our fans in Timor-Leste."
Awan said that the Burger King opening was the culmination of more than three years of hard work and planning.
“My initial approaches were met with the response that the Timor-Leste market was not yet ready for Burger King. But I knew that this country’s time had come,” he said, “I have had to face the challenge of replicating all of the details of the restaurant and the menu to a standard that is consistent with all Burger King franchises throughout the world, and that challenge has been met”.

“Our Timorese staff have been selected for their aptitude, and trained to deliver professional service that is worthy of the brand name,” he added, “They have also gained valuable food preparation and hygiene skills, which they are already putting into practice in this very busy restaurant. Their achievement demonstrates that in spite of their inexperience, given high-quality training and management systems, Timorese staff are the equal of any other Burger King staff anywhere in the world.  I have to say that I have never been more confident about the ability of a team to deliver consistent, high quality service”.

“I am proud to say that this restaurant is one of the biggest Burger King restaurant within a shopping centre in the whole of the company’s Asia-Pacific division. It's a milestone for Timor-Leste,” he said as he watched the ribbon being cut for the formal opening by former President Nobel Laureate Jose-Ramos Horta, Vice Prime Minister Fernando La Sama de Araújo, the Ambassador of the Philippines Maria Aileen Bugarin and Timor Plaza Chairman Jape Kong Su.

“I am especially happy to be able to extend the food and beverage choices available in this country by introducing such a well-loved international brand,” Awan said, “Personally, I’ve always enjoyed   Burger King’s products and I know they will be a winner with the Timorese people. In line with Burger King Worldwide, Inc.'s Global Growth Strategy, which has recently seen major expansion in the Chinese market as well as new franchises in Pakistan, Brunei and India, Awan revealed that he plans to open many more new outlets, a venture that will ultimately employ hundreds of local people.

Founded in 1954, Burger King is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. The original Home of the Whopper, the Burger King system operates in over 13,000 locations serving more than 11 million guests daily in 91 countries and territories worldwide. Approximately 99 percent of Burger King restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, many of them family-owned operations that have been in business for decades.
