Marta's Place: Kind of a dive diner, but Marta's cooking is mighty good. That's the only thing about her that's good. She might have taken a line from Mae West and said, "I'm okay when I'm good, but when I'm bad I'm even better:"
Hal Morrison is  just a young guy looking for a job to make a few bucks. He started at counterman, but soon Marta has him doing more...a lot more. But she pays well. What's a guy gonna do? Besides, Hal has to support a lazy wannabe actress. Lord help him if Marta ever finds out!
You just know she will and it's downhill all the rest of the way when detectives try to pin a murder rap on Hal and Marta's gangsta brother enters the picture.
To paraphrase Mae West, "Hal's life ain't good, but when it's bad, it's even worse." From Cambridge Books http://writewordsinc.com #amazon

Sand Bluff is just a sleepy little California town, long ago by-passed by I-5. Many of its businesses,  like the old Richfield station just north of town, have faded into history. As one old-timer says, "Most excitement this here town ever seen was that day whenever the Elvis tour bus had a flat back in sixty-six. Everbody got a pitcher took with the bus. But hell, Elvis wa'n't even on it. He taken the plane they said."
In this world coincidences do happen. Brand new detective Jonas McCleary has barely started on what promises to be an easy job when on his third morning, he's slapped with a homicide case. Before he can really get started on that, Twyla Peters, Sand Bluff's registered official town hussy, is found murdered.
Before Jonas can get acclimated and even begin to figure out what's going on, he's going to have to lay his very life on the line, but if he survives (okay, we all know he's going to survive), he'll bring a killer to justice and set things reasonably straight in Sand Bluff. Get it now from Cambridge Books, http://writewordsinc.com #amazon  and all likely places. If you like it, you can follow it with the further adventures of Jonas McCleary. He's a nice guy.

Introduction

I work alone. I'm a private eye. When my casebook's empty— and it's empty a lot—I write books. Murder books. I wear a dark fedora and a trench coat even when it's a hundred and five in Sacramento.  I pack an 11mm Marley I bought at the Archie Goodwin estate sale.  I've been around. I know which end the slugs come out of.  But 11mm slugs?  Hard to come by these days.

People say I've got attitude.  Attitude they don't like.  I get that a lot.  The cops and me? We work toward the same end, but we're like water and electricity. They think I cramp their style. They hate that  I don't have to play by their rules.

I usually end up  needing a lawyer.  I  had one.  He fell off the back of an ambulance and got run over by a speeding Cooper.  I'm alone and  on my own.  It's a mean life.  I'm used to it.

Okay, really, I'm not at all like that.  I'm just a mild-mannered fellow who loves mysteries and detectives. I sit at my desk and drink coffee and daydream. I've never gone strapped (except for cash and a stint in the army), and I've never shot anybody and nobody's ever shot me. I've been happily married to the beautiful Irma since 1967.  While my head's in the clouds, she helps keep my feet on the ground.  That ain't easy.

I'm sure people in law enforcement laugh and/or snort at boo-boos they run across in crime fiction.  They may think we're stupid or simply ignorant.  FYI we may or may not know what we're writing about, but in writing there's a technical loophole that covers this.  It's called poetic license. It's legal.

Try one of my books. If you like it, buy another. If you don't, give it to somebody you don't like.

Always good ambiance. Food is always good. We particularly like the hamburgers, an item that thousands prepare but only a few do right. The hambrugers are moist, juicy, tender and prepared just right time after time. The only comparison I can make it to travel all the way to France to the Indiana chain for a comparable burger, and the airfare is very high.

Overall, we've been happy customers since the Florin Road locaiton opened. Recently the signs have been changed, with some price increases. This is acceptable. We understand. But the menu board clearly states: Enchiladas with rice and beans, guacamole, lettuce and tomato, sour cream and tortillas. However, when my wife asked for her tortillas she was charged extra. She pointed out that the menu includes them and the attendant stated the tortillas were wrapped around the enchiladas. Come on! We all know an enchilada is a tortilla with some filling. When the menu adds: tortillas, we expect some tortillas. Besides, having often been to Mexico, I know that down there, tortillas are like coffee up here: endless refills at no extra charge. If La Taquería doesn't want to give tortillas with the enchilada plate, then we feel they should not mention it at all on the menu. La Taquería just went down a few points in our book.
