It’s Sunday in October and every sports fan knows what that means. Yep, a busy driving range and a robust tee sheet that would make you think it’s a packed Saturday in July.

Some courses struggle to attract customers during football season, but Oaks North Golf Course in Rancho Bernardo is not one of them.

One of the main reasons is the Parent-Junior League, a long-running Sunday program featuring friendly 9-hole events. The league, which runs August-October, always attracts a steady stream of young golfers and their dads, moms and grandparents.

Oaks North head pro: “It’s a game you can share with family forever.”

We recently checked in with Lloyd Porter, the longtime head pro at Oaks North Golf Course. In the golf business for more than 30 years, Porter talked about his days as a caddie in Hawaii, the challenges the industry is facing, and his special bond with the executive course in Rancho Bernardo.

I’ve often wondered why those guys who smash those 400-yard tee shots in those long-drive competitions rarely surface on the PGA Tour.

Well, unless you’re Happy Gilmore, we know the short game is a prerequisite for having any kind of golf game. Drive for show and putt for dough is the mantra as we know.

That’s why I love spending time at executive and par-3 tracks. Places such as Reidy Creek, Oaks North and the Welk Resort are ideal courses to work on your short game.
