Children are really just small adults and they respond to the same emotional motivators that drive all of us. Don’t you just love it when somebody asks for your opinion on something? Asking for a student's opinion on some aspect of your classroom plan such as what kind of border to put up on your bulletin board is an extremely powerful way to build a relationship in which the child feels valued, don't you think?

Do you have a classroom theme this year?

Many children are raised in families where they are never excluded from an adult conversation so they don’t know that they shouldn't be standing 2 feet away while you are trying to discuss something with another teacher or staff member. They have to be reminded “this is an adult conversation, please go back to what you were doing until we are finished”. The words “adult conversation” should be their cue to leave and not stand by and wait (and listen). This is my approach, what's yours?

I think a very thoughtful and intentional use of specific compliments can be a great foundation for the ideal classroom management system. Complimenting what we want more of is much more effective than focusing on what we don’t want to occur. Click like if you agree.

I’ve never been a fan of buying good behavior with treats but I am not adverse to providing the occasional treat surprise to my kids. It’s funny that each group develops a different type of food that they are crazy about. I’ve had everything from vegetable lovers to sour gummy lovers, have your students ever developed a favorite treat?

How do we teach students to always use a respectful tone of voice? The only way I’ve ever figured out how to do that is to model it myself and trying really hard to never exhibit the kind of behavior that we do not want our children to implement. I’m talking about raising our voices to the level of what could be considered shouting. What do you think?

Motivating students to write often comes down to the prompt. What’s the most effective writing prompt that you have ever used in your classroom?

As much as I emphasize not interrupting to children these are still small kids and we must always keep in mind the “bathroom emergency”. That’s one interruption that can and should be dealt with very quickly!

My kids have always loved anything having to do with money even if it’s fake. Do you have play money in your classroom for teaching about currency? Do your kids love it too?
