A storm rolled over the Pacific Coast churning up the water in Shark Fin Cove.  Also known as Shark Tooth Cove, or Jah Beach.  Whatever  the name, it's always a great place for photography or just hanging out to watch the surf.

Thanks for looking!

I got to spend a little time on the Central Coast over Memorial Day weekend with my good buddy, Marc.  We went to Montana de Oro State Park with enough time to scout around and were pleased to see an opening on the horizon with the promise of a good sunset.  I wandered about the area taking test shots of possible compositions and was so glad I settled on this spot just as the sunlight broke through the clouds.  This place is full of endless possibilities and is well worth the time to visit no matter the conditions.

Thanks for looking!

Chillin' at Convict Lake

Getting snow here the first week of May isn't really that uncommon, but after three years of drought it was absolutely amazing and quite welcome.  I enjoyed the opportunity to be chillin' at Convict Lake, getting this shot as the snow flurries continued falling on this very cold and beautiful morning.

I have a number of photography workshops scheduled for this summer at many locations along the Eastern Sierra.  Please have a look at my website or send me an email for more info.  Thanks for looking!

Martin's Beach Sea Stack

The iconic sea stack at Martin's Beach on a cloudy day.  This is not the side of the rock which people generally shoot, but it is the only side where a reflection is possible.  And I like reflections.  :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to look!

A Good Photograph is Knowing Where to Stand

My first visit to Martin's Beach was on a cloudy, foggy day with alerts to beware sneaker waves and rip tide…not that I intended on doing any swimming!  The tide was on its way out when I got to this spot and noticed how the waves came in from both sides of the iconic sea stack.  I thought I could get a reflection of the stack and hopefully a nice line of the opposing waves where they crashed together.  After a few shots trying to get a clear reflection, the tide came up washing over my feet, and then receded leaving these wonderful streaks of darker volcanic sand on either side of the reflection.  I couldn't have predicted the streaks and was really just lucky I stood where I did.  For those who don't know, the title of this shot is a famous quote by Ansel Adams.  Worked for me!  :)

Thanks for looking!

I like the lines in the wet sand converging towards the stack.

Wrap Around Porch

While exploring the Conway Ranch near Lee Vining, I came around the corner of the house and saw this design on the old wrap around porch.  I really liked the lines and textures of the old, sun-baked boards.  The difficulty was getting my camera between the two posts at the corner of the porch in such a way as to get as much of the boards as possible.  I also had to do some focus stacking because of the wonky angles.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look!

Night at Manhattan Beach Pier

The night was clear, the tide was high, and I'd just finished a nice dinner with my son and his girlfriend. I'd shot this pier before on a foggy night and thought it was worthwhile to get another one. The ambient light cast a nice glow on the surrounding tide giving off enough reflective light to bring out the pilings and underbelly of the pier below. A little breezy, but not too cold, my jeans rolled up to my calves, my toes in the sand, and working the scene with my camera. It was a lovely evening to enjoy photography and hanging out with family on the Southern California coast.

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!

Tufa with Snow

It's not every day you can get a shot of the tufa with snow at Mono Lake.  We were so lucky to have this late Spring storm roll through in the month of May.  My good buddy, Matt and I were the first people here at South Tufa hiking through about a foot of snow down the trail.  We would have been here earlier, but the snow plows piled all the snow down the center of Hwy. 395, so we had to drive all the way to Mammoth Lakes before we could turn around.  It ended up being OK because we spent some time shooting at Convict Lake, which was beautiful as well.  The snow on the iconic Ship Rock and the low hanging storm cloud helped to make this one incredibly memorable morning.

I have two upcoming workshops here at Mono Lake in mid-June and mid-July.  If you'd like to join me, please see my website, jeandayphotography.com or send me an email for more info. info@jeandayphotography.com

The morning's sunrise alpenglow on the Eastern Sierra as seen through Lathe Arch in the Alabama Hills.

I captured this image on a lovely, warm summer morning and lucky me, without another soul around.  I can help you get this shot and many others at locations from Bodie down to the Alabama Hills.  If you'd like to join me on one of my photography workshops along the Eastern Sierra, please have a look at my website or send me an email for more info.  Thanks for looking!

A red framed doorway of one barn looking through to another barn.  I loved how the red stood out against the decayed and weathered wood slats of this side of the barn.  It was also a bonus to have some good subject matter on the other side.  Even better to stop here at just the right time of day for the best light.  Photography is cool.

Thanks for looking!

Sand Painting

When conditions aren't giving you epic light and color, it doesn't mean you can't get a worthwhile shot.  All it takes is a little look around and thinking outside the box.  I happen to love the intimate abstract so when I noticed this pattern in the sand left behind by the outgoing surf, I knew I had to get the shot.  A little sand painting in the natural artistry of Mother Nature.

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!
